Mystery Beef: Should Country of Origin Labels on Beef, Pork, and Chicken Products be Eliminated?

Argument in favor

Current labeling laws have to change to comply with a recent World Trade Organization ruling requiring the U.S. to repeal the regulations or face retaliatory tariffs that could make U.S. exports less competitive.

I was unaware until I tried to donate blood that my family and I may have been exposed to Mad Cow disease while stationed overseas. It's important to know where your food comes from,

This is great at loosing regulation and I bet most nay voters don't even check where there meat is from until they saw this. If you are so cautious, try googling it or perhaps asking the butcher.

Argument opposed

Consumers want to know, and have the right to know, where their food comes from. These labels are worth keeping — even if the U.S. faces economic punishment from other global players.

I believe that knowing where one's products originate from- as well as what is in them- is vitally important for consumers and the market in general. I will, however, have to disagree with Operaman's implied assertion on deer meat; I can attest to the delicious qualities of meat derived from deer, and argue that it is far superior to beef in every possible way.

What if the meat was in a country known for bad-quality? We have the right to know to be safe!

The right to NOT disclose? We need this information to ensure we are eating from safe sources and the cost to provide this information is minimal (as a business economist/consultant I do know disclosing this is easy to comply with). Sounds like yet another "snow job" proposal.

You don't care where your food comes from? How it's raised has a direct affect on your health and the planet. Growth hormones, antibiotics, and methane.

It's devastating enough that the food industry readily lies about their products, its atmosphere when being transformed into an editable food, and nutritional content as well. The United States is unfortunately home to well over 90% of meats that are indeed factory farmed, caged and abused, and temporary residing in unsafe/unsanitary and in healthy conditions before they are brutally and unthinkably slaughtered. My apologies for the such vehement emotion of this sickening matter buts it's a subject in which a plethora of Americans are extremely ignorant about and it would not hurt to truly retain of what you are consuming in grocery stores that are industrially established that contain these abused meats as well. Yes! Stores that you visit daily incorporating Walmart, Stop and Shop, King kullen, And ABSURDLY WHOLE FOODS! AS WELL. Now industries will typically try to promote that their regulations of meat is perfectly coordinated and that the animals nearly to be slaughtered are residing like "Kings" and "Queens". Now that's what you see on industrial companies dictated by bureaucrats will post on their packaging that such examples include, "Cage free" or "Free-factory farm. They write these deceiving labels to catch our eyes because they know that it's about competition with opposing industries to see who can get more consumers purchasing their products for their benefit not YOURS. To tell you the truth they can care less about your health, however, they do care about regulating any unhealthy product that has been abused to make themselves a BOOMING PROFIT! Although, you may believe what you see on these labels but when you actually see how they coordinate their process to execute their animals in these farms that are secretly scattered throughout the United States ITS QUITE DISTURBING! You will typically notice cover ups by meat industries by purchasing meats from Tyson, and an abundance of national fast food industries mainly McDonalds that is home to some of the most fatal meats on THE FACE OF THE EARTH! If you don't believe have a look at descriptive documentary that accurately shows YOU AMERICANS OF WHAT MEAT YOU ARE TRULLY CONSUMING. Here is the link to the documentary of Food Ink if you wish to purchase it (it's highly informational) https://www.google.com/search?q=food+inc+documentary&client=safari&sa=X&hl=en&biw=414&bih=628&tbs=vw:l&tbm=shop&prmd=vni&srpd=3697420086155523984&prds=epd:1440085164601090201,paur:ClkAsKraX3MSKiYlCfg40h-yV1-2Lqu-mjoc9LDSC38TJ6kUyY9jvVZT6DHTTVnozuIlC-PjQqWKvJKikQJz2ySGvwMcfefmiPTmAcASdn6looob64TtXVO6khIZAFPVH71hhWNfyCv7N5PYlskD7Opg3HFFVA,cdl:1,cid:2265782510361196500&ved=0ahUKEwi8stim7cDNAhUD7D4KHQXMBeAQgTYI2AEwAA&ei=_EBtV7zEA4PY-wGFmJeADg. You may also view this film on other sources as well incorporating Netflix. We can greatly influence and educate our nations citizens by spreading this word of knowledge to ensure our health and make a stand to these corrupt industries that we are tired of consuming abused animals. YOU WOULD BE MAKING A GREAT CONTRIBUTION! You can also help as well by consuming foods locally near you such as local farms as well not always industrial grocery stores that millions of Americans travel to every year to be left off with a life threatening result for their FAMILIES. (SO YES WHEN YOU ASK ME SHOULD WE HAVE MEATS IN GROCERY STORES THAT CONTAIN INFORMATIONAL NUTRITIONAL CONTENT AND ITS COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: I WOULD SAY ITS IN OUR BEST INTEREST!) Don't let the meat industry machine fool you most are very deceiving to crumble your health and BOOM THEIR COMPANIES PROFIT, thank you for your time.

We have the right as consumers to know where what we are eating comes from. Any labeling that gives the image that a mass produced meat comes from a legitimate farm is fraudulent.

Let's support TRUTH in labeling. My wife would panic if she learned her hamburger was half horse meat or her lobster was actually a fish. If everyone has the truth, there will be no question as to sources. Same idea will apply to Country Or Origin. Ever hear a friend recommend deer meat in place of beef or snake in place of chicken? "How was the chili? It was really elk. Ever think about Horse Slaughterhouse in Mexico? Hey, right across the border. How convenient!

I do not trust that imported meat is handled as safely or with the same safety regulations that we have in place in the US to protect citizens.

Not no, but hell no! Wtf, I'd like to know what I'm buying. We already buy cheap foreign stuff from countries who have poor regulations. I personally don't want a burger with Chinese lead paint in it. Here is a thought to remember, you get what you pay for. We have plenty of farmers that produce good foods for us. Let's support them, the farmers here are the best most productive in the world. Why be cheap after all we have regulations to protect our food. No thanks I don't want meat labeled steak when it could be something else.

We have the right to know where our food comes from. So the US will face retaliatory tariffs? Go fight that issue, fearless "leaders"!! Don't put US citizens in the dark to avoid these tariffs, go fight for what is right! Though I don't see any of them doing this, as so many "leaders" are fighting for what is wrong and grotesque.
