Should Schools be Prohibited From 'Lunch Shaming' Children Unable to Pay for a Meal?

Argument in favor

It’s wrong for schools to discriminate against or stigmatize children because their parents haven’t paid their school meal bills. Lunch shaming should be prohibited.

Why was it ever permitted in the first place? People of limited means suffer enough. We don’t need to add shame to their burden. Whatever happened to Americans lifting one another up and helping each other out?

Have any of you observed what happens in a school during lunch? I have observed kids who would rather go hungry than appear as though they need a government handout. Add to their shame by giving kids a “lesser lunch” than their peers. We held fundraisers so no child would be humiliated, nor their family.

No child should go hungry and this kind of bullying is unconscionable.

Argument opposed

There’s nothing wrong with having children whose parents can’t pay for their meals at school do extra chores, this bill is a solution in search of a problem.

The federal government needs to stay out because it’s a local issue. There is nothing wrong with doing a little labor to help pay for the meal. We need to stop treating our children like marshmallows and start treating them like human beings. They need to learn to grow up and be responsible.

Bring a lunch, my brothers and I packed our lunches and only bought holiday lunches. We were definitely not alone packing lunches.

Don’t shame children because their family is poor or not paying on time. The children are in no way responsible for their parents. If there are family issues forcing them into poverty- not the kids problem. If the family doesn’t pay on time- get after the family- not the kids problem. Let’s not brand them. Let’s help them get educated and responsible for the sake of their kids.

It wouldn’t be fair for a student to have to do chores or pretty much be discriminated against because their parents couldn’t afford to pay for their lunches and breakfasts. Those students just need something to eat throughout the day and punishing them that way is cruel. Let this bill pass, please!

Why do people want to shame children for things they have no control over and yet preach a 0 tolerance policy for bullying? Seems like they are the biggest bullies of all.

It’s not the fault of the child that they live in a low income household nor is it the fault of their parents. It’s an economy that isn’t working for the working class and poor! Lunch shaming is poor shaming. Lunch should be free to every child in public schools!

I for one have lived several years on this kind of assistance during my young years so werw many children I grew up around. We were never shamed or put upon because of it. It helped me survive because of the lack of enough food at home. Enough is enough of this travesty for our country's children ond the world's children as well... No one should be without food, shelter and education.

Again I see comments that it is ok to punish children or ‘make them do chores’ in order to eat. Ya right let’s put 5-8 years to work because their parents are poor and shame the kids plus deny them food. What is wrong with people, do you have no compassion or empathy for children? It is our responsibility to protect and nurture children as a society and schools should not be allowed to prevent children from a meal due to money. I have become so discouraged by attitudes toward the poor, minorities, undocumented, etc. in this country and so many spouting this crap declare themselves Christian. Well you definitely don’t follow Jesus. The level of self righteousness and selfishness is beyond the pale.

They. Are. Children. How does bullying a child who is already hungry help? I see the thought process, but how does it help?

It’s our kids for God’s sake....they shouldn’t be punished for the families they are born into. Every child should have the right to three meals a day and that should include healthy meals while attending school...which ironically is required by law(atleast where we live K-12 is mandatory for all kids.)

Absolutely. Lunch shaming is a disgusting act and behavior performed by illegitimate people on this earth. Any person who shames a child for anything, should be imprisoned for a minimum of 1-year. Shaming causes psychological problems, that affect a child’s learning, social status among peers, issues at home and other problems. Those that lunch-shame are domestic terrorists and should be exported to Iran.

As an adult I understand the sentiment behind the proposal to have kids do extra chores or use an alternate means of payment identification when on subsidized lunch. As a kid who experienced these things, I can tell you first hand how it feels to do so. Please pass this legislation.

We should be providing high quality meals to all of our students by funding our schools and preschools at the levels our children deserve!
