house Bill H.R. 221

Should the State Department's Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism be Strengthened?

Argument in favor

Jewish communities in the U.S. and around the world are targeted for hatred and violence, and by strengthening the State Department’s Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism in the the government will counteract such bigotry.

Yes. All agencies assigned to target Racism and antisemitism should be strengthened. Especially with a racist as president.

The comments on this bill speak to the necessity of it. There is a reason I am moving to Israel, and that is primarily because I refuse to sit around and watch antisemitism get worse here until it inevitably becomes unsafe for Jews.

Anything to do with fighting hate, racism, anti-semitism etc should be funded and approved and enforced to the ultimate extent of the law. It will help to get the most discriminating hateful and spiteful person out the office to fully enforce it though.

Argument opposed

While the Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism fills an important role, making it an ambassador-level position won’t make much of a difference. Alternatively, the position should be eliminated or left vacant.

I am not sure why this position is specific to anti-semitism. Should it not be generalized to any religious / ethnic group?

This blurs the line between anti-Israeli rhetoric and anti-semitism. The biggest proponents of this bill are Israeli war criminals. This is against our 1st amendment rights #shameful

With this president and his followers thinking race is a card in America we need to make it stronger.

I could not be more strongly against anti-semitism, but I do not think that we need another worthless government position. Protect all Americans.

H.R. 221: Special Envoy to Monitor & Combat Anti-Semitism Act I’m in strong support of and recommend the passage of the HOUSE bill H.R. 221 AKA Special Envoy to Monitor & Combat Anti-Semitism Act which would make the Special Envoy to Monitor to Combat Anti-Semitism an ambassador-level position appointed by the president and subject to confirmation by the Senate. The Special Envoy would be required to: * 1) be a person of recognized distinction in the field of combating anti-Semitism or religious freedom; * 2) serve as the primary advisor to the U.S. government and coordinate efforts across agencies to monitor and combat anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic incitement; and * 3) report directly to the Secretary of State. Jewish communities in the U.S. and around the world are targeted for hatred and violence, and by strengthening the State Department’s Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism in the the government will counteract such bigotry. I'm thankful that President Trump, with his Jewish son in law, daughter, and grandchildren, and his understanding of our need to strengthen our bonds with our greatest ally in the Middle East, will support this. Jews world wide are again being targeted, and Michigan elected a Muslim pro Palestinian congresswoman!

If Mitch McConnell fails to do his constitutional obligations to bring legislation to the floor that could end this Shutdown. Conceivably, the Republican caucus could reopen the leadership matter next week and oust McConnell with a simple majority vote. Please Act like the co-equal branch of government our Constitution says you are.

Instances of anti-Semitic activities have been much exaggerated. Not that anti-Semitism doesn't exist, but there is more prejudice toward Muslims, blacks and Hispanics. Hatred, violence and prejudice from any group toward any other group needs to be addressed. No special treatment for certain groups over others.
