Do Federal Cops Need to Keep Their Guns During Government Shutdowns?

Argument in favor

Federal law enforcement officers are just as vulnerable to people wishing to do them harm when they’re furloughed as they are when carrying out their normal duties. They need to be able to defend themselves at all times, and should be able to keep their government-issued gun during.

I'm not exactly sure why we're disarming cops during shutdowns, but there's no reason the population should be endangered because of petty squabbling.

Cops are Cops. Cops carry guns. That what they DO. But I would like to know about "Government Shutdown?" Has anyone heard about a shutdown? Who is starting this rumor? Could it be that when the Democrats loose in November that Mr. Executive Orders himself will close D.C. and Declares Marshal Law. He will need time to hide all his illegal actions. And please remember those stories of off duty cops taking down a perpetrator doing harm to others in grocery stores or malls. Cops are on duty 24/7- don't forget it.

Why would you want to disarm them??? Today, perhaps more than ever, the cops need to be armed. The Left is waging a war against our LEOs! Not letting them keep their guns during a government shutdown is about as asinine an idea as not letting military recruiters bear arms at recruiting centers. The world has gotten a lot more dangerous, and it's partly thanks to Obama's policies.

Argument opposed

If a federal law enforcement officer is furloughed, by definition they aren’t working. They shouldn’t carry a government-issued firearm when they aren’t working and if they’re that concerned about their safety they can buy a personal firearm.

Really! How about members of congress losing ALL pay, and benefits during a shutdown. Don't we have more serious issues to worry about like national security, and the budget!!

If these items were purchased with public monies they should be surrendered during a government shutdown. Police still have the option to own personal firearms.

They can own their own guns and go through the same hoops as a regular citizen for carrying within the status of being a regular citizen.

What is House Bill H.R. 2137?

This bill would allow federal law enforcement officers to continue carrying their government-issued gun when furloughed — like during a government shutdown — to the same extent they did prior to the furlough.

It would apply when law enforcement officers are furloughed because of downsizing, reduced funding, lack of work, or any budget situation including a lapse in appropriations. Under current law federal law enforcement officers are required to turn in their government-issued guns while they’re furloughed.

Only federal law enforcement officers that carry a weapon during their official duties have the authority to make arrests or apprehensions, or prosecute violations of federal laws.

Impact

Federal law enforcement officers who carry firearms during their normal duties but are furloughed; and federal law enforcement agencies.

Cost of House Bill H.R. 2137

The CBO estimates that implementing this bill would have no significant cost to the federal government.

More Information

In-Depth: Sponsoring Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) introduced this bill to give federal law enforcement officers the ability to keep their government-issued guns for protection during government shutdowns or other furloughs:

“Ensuring that federal law enforcement officers have the tools they need to defend themselves is critical to protecting them from the threats they face every day… During the lapse in funding in 2013, about 1800 federal officers were forced to hand over their government issued firearms in a seemingly arbitrary decision. These officers are highly trained and know the responsibilities associated with possessing a weapon; it does not make sense to disarm them if there is a lapse in federal appropriations, especially as our country faces increasing national security threats.”

This legislation was passed by the House Judiciary Committee on a voice vote, and it has the bipartisan support of three Republican and two Democratic cosponsors.

This is ridiculous, when they're furloughed they are not working which by definition means they aren't using their tools of the trade. This is words of another paranoid senator convinced there's a war on police.

My objection is to the idea that the Congress can shut down the government and still expect federal employees WHO ARE NOT BEING PAID to keep working! You may remember the conservative outrage that federal monuments & parks were closed during the last shutdown. Members of Congress are generally such total idiots that they expect anything that inconveniences them to continue to function no matter what. HELL NO!

Personals only, our taxes shouldn't pay for their guns when off the job. They can use the guns they own, like everyone else.

Stupid question. There should be no government shutdowns. Let the idiots like Ted Cruz do their job if there is a government shutdown. But please don't give him a gun.

If they are shut down then they are shut down and are on Furlough. If they feel the need to be armed, they can use their own gun, most of them have a personal firearm already.

Saying that they shouldn't be allowed to carry their guns during a government shut down is the same as the military not operating during one, and that would be bad

If you are off the clock, then so are your tools. But who says you can not purchase your own hobby tool when you are not working. Just make sure you are 100 per cent legal with your CCW.
