Should the State Department Have Staff Focused on Advancing U.S. Energy Security Interests?

Argument in favor

The bill will help ensure that we have enough energy for both the U.S. and her allies now and in the future to help ensure global stability by improving coordination of diplomatic matters related to energy.

If we wait for the free market to decide saving the world will reap profits, then we’re all fucked. Government intervention in the capitalist drive to destroy the environment is justified.

Yes, this would provide a global coordination of renewable energy platforms.

The Department of Energy is crucial to the security, safety, and innovation of this nation. The fact that the transition team was ill equipped and lacking in the requisite knowledge needed to provide adequate oversight is simply unacceptable. Republicans who continue to support Trump into a second term, should be held fiscally accountable for the economic damage and criminally liable for any negligence. Republicans know the cost and yet they have done little to protect this nation. Forming a shadow government is not an option provided by our Constitution. For those of you who are skeptical please read “The Fifth Risk” by Michael Lewis. excerpt The Trump people didn’t seem to grasp how much more than just energy the Department of Energy was about. They weren’t totally oblivious to the nuclear arsenal, but even the nuclear arsenal didn’t provoke in them much curiosity. “They were just looking for dirt, basically,” said one of the people who briefed the Beachhead Team on national security issues. “‘ What is the Obama administration not letting you do to keep the country safe?’” The briefers were at pains to explain an especially sensitive aspect of national security: the United States no longer tests its nuclear weapons. Instead, it relies on physicists at three of the national labs—Los Alamos, Livermore, and Sandia—to simulate explosions, using old and decaying nuclear materials... ☢️ With Russia ramping up its nuclear weapons programs it is absolutely critical that we not drop the ball in either the funding or staffing of the Department of Energy.

Argument opposed

If the State Department isn’t already adequately staffed to handle matters related to energy diplomacy, then it’s unlikely this bill will significantly improve America’s energy security.

My reading of this indicates this legislation is about protecting our oil and gas interests and not about any of the ‘green’ initiatives that need international prioritization. The State Department needs staff dedicated to engaging others in energy conservation and coordinated efforts to address climate change. Not with this administration! Infrastructure cyber security to protect energy assets is not part of the State Departments mission. So, what the hell is this legislation even for? Sounds like a crony-capitalist bill that can be wrangled into support for special interests.

Stop trying to appoint right wing “energy lobbyists” into a system that needs real help in transforming the world to a green economy.

Focus on solar and wind energy, water turbines, that are all local. Quit relying on oil from overseas, quit relying on oil at all. Save our independence and the earth at the same time.

You are all ready a dollar short and two days late. The Saudi's are already investing in alternative generation realizing the world will wind up using less oil. While our previous administrations have been squandering billions in Iraq and Afghanistan other countries are far ahead of us in alternative energy forms. So if you aren't there, your Bill is a waste of time and money.

“Energy Security” is Trumpspeak for pushing fossil fuel use just to boost the already obscene profits of Big Polluters. The military identified climate change as our biggest threat over a decade ago but nobody wants to do anything about that.

Let’s give that money to fully fund election security. I know some democrats who would improve American security once they are elected president.

Absolutely not while Donald Trump is in office because the man has no idea what he’s doing he will do nothing but create havoc and wreck the whole energy system in this country. It’s a shame I have to say this but the man is a total and absolute moron.

We need to focus on solar and wind alternatives rather than supporting petroleum lobbyists. The administration’s efforts are even putting our obligations as Earth’s stewards to the back burner threatening our parks and precious animals - even those near extinction. Our greed for business profits is ultimately costing treasures that can never be replaced.
