Getting Back to the Moon

Argument in favor

As a world leader, the U.S. should be at the forefront of space innovation. Returning to the moon and establishing a base there would create momentum for further exploration in the final frontier.

I think going back to the moon and setting up a base is a great stepping stone for Mars. I feel that America shouldn't go through this venture alone and there should be international cooperation as well as corporate sponsors help offset the costs.

Man must journey outward. It's inevitable. We should lead that drive, claim celestial bodies for exploitation, and discover what's out there and how to get there faster. The space language should be English, not Russian or Chinese.

Argument opposed

There is no plan to fund this project, which will undoubtedly be very costly. With private sector companies handling more of NASA’s logistics, the U.S. should look beyond the Moon, to Mars or asteroids.

How about we fix our roads, bridges, etc, and lower college costs. There is a lot of work to do here before we fund a moon colony.

This should be done by private organizations, rather than a government that is in debt up to the eye balls.

Let's fix this world and help the people in it, starting at home. Then we can see about going farther. Plus the government led the way, let's see what private industry can do with it.

What is House Bill H.R. 2036?

This bill aims to reassert America’s leadership in space exploration by setting new objectives for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

NASA would be directed to plan a return to the Moon by 2022, and to develop a sustained human presence there. The purpose of the Moon base would be to promote exploration, commerce, science, and U.S. preeminence in space as a stepping stone for future exploration of Mars and other destinations.

Impact

NASA employees, contractors, scientists and researchers, sci-fi fans, and private space exploration companies.

Cost of House Bill H.R. 2036

A CBO cost estimate is unavailable.

More Information

In-Depth: U.S. space exploration has been a contentious topic since NASA elected to discontinue its space shuttle program, forcing American astronauts to hitch rides into orbit on Russian spacecrafts. This was suggested as a way of cutting costs and helping to reduce the budget deficit.

In addition to collaborating with Russia on getting American astronauts into space, NASA has seen private sector competition emerge in the form of SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and Orbital Sciences, among others. These companies have started making supply deliveries to the International Space Station, and eventually may deliver astronauts to the facility.

The development of these private sector space companies has been impressive, but there have been setbacks that remind us all of the dangers of space exploration. A Virgin Galactic test flight accident led to the death of one person, and the severe injury of another; while an Orbital Sciences rocket that was going to deliver 5000 pounds of supplies to the International Space Station exploded on launch.

Still, NASA has its sights set on eventually putting astronauts on Mars, and in the interim will attempt to capture an asteroid to redirect it to the Moon where it can be studied.

The moon is very reasonable steppingstone to Mars. Establishing a presence on the moon allows us to do long-term research that will lead to innovations that will secure a more successful mission to Mars.

The fact that our nations infrastructure and economy is currently embarrassing and in horrible condition, we must utilize our money to assist with our nations desperate needs before we are concerned about space exploration (such as the moon). There are plethora amount of matters that must be diffused and repaired in our nation before we invest our money in space exploration. However it would be an honor for our nation to land the moon once again and possibly establish a community there as well once our technology has advanced in the future. It was one of the greatest achievements during the Cold War when the United states defeated the Soviet Union in landing both a man and a dog on the moon as well. We are nation of power, if our federal government works together and is strategic then as a nation we will achieve outstanding things that will benefit our society. America can do anything as long as they set their mind to it. So first lets prioritize our matters here on earth and then in the coming near future WE WILL MAKE HISTORY OCCUR AGAIN BY LANDING ON THE MOON!

The US should lead an international effort similar to the ISS to create and International Moon Station. Such a station could be used as a research facility much as the ISS is but could also be used as the proving grounds for a mission to Mars. Also, leading an international effort to explore space leads to better relations here at home, nothing makes humans conflicts seem more solvable than seeing the earth from space.

The lack of a plan for funding is an opportunity for sponsors to jump in. We're going to need their help here, but we certainly can't miss out on major objectives like a moon base or Mars.

The moon is our stepping stone to the Galaxy. We need to get off this earth because it's the future of our species. Although I do believe it should be an international effort.

Yes! This will increase human accomplishment. Why do we want to go to the moon and later Mars and other destinations? To quote George Mallory "Because it is there".

The fact that we just abandoned the moon flights in the 70s was a travesty. NASA should return to the moon as well as Mars and beyond.

Why don't we focus on getting our feet down to earth, first. that way we will never have to worry about wasting time in the radiated vacuum of space.

The idea for this bill is actually fairly good. Instead of working against Russia we'll be working together. (A compromise in the Space Race! What a concept!) Starting at the moon is a very good start, looking beyond is a goal, but should not be the first step. It's foolish to think that. I agree that America needs to go beyond, but going alone is not what we should be thinking. We're going to space as humans, that should be the mindset we give to our children.

If colonizing the solar system is to ever happen, it is imperative it be done by the USA. Losing record this race would put the USA behind whoever beats us there in the colonizing and developing stages of space travel and living.
