Should Unauthorized Immigrants Be Banned From Receiving Social Security Benefits?

Argument in favor

Social Security is already on the road to bankruptcy, and allowing people who have come here illegally to be eligible to receive benefits will only worsen its financial condition.

When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people. This is a necessary step in fixing the welfare and immigration systems. We cannot afford the perverse incentives which encourage immigrants to seek handouts. Instead, allow all who wish to better themselves to come and contribute. They should also not need to pay in, along with all our youth who we currently steal from to give to the elderly.

Illegal immigrants snuck into this country illegally, they should not receive any of the benefits of being a US citizen.

Argument opposed

Many unauthorized immigrants pay into Social Security through payroll taxes. Now, more than ever with the executive action, they should receive the benefits they’re paying into.

If they are paid by check they pay taxes! If they are paid cash, prosecute the employer!

Republicans want to cut, or worse, privatize Social Security for all sorts of dubious reasons. Social Security is funded by workers, not taxpayers, so cutting it will not alleviate our budget deficit, because Social Security does not contribute to our deficit. In fact, the US owes money to Social Security. Also, it is only taxed on your first $118,000, so multi-billionaires pay the same rate as someone who makes barely over $100,000 a year. If we remove the cap on Social Security taxes, then Social Security will be solvent forever.

THESE SHOULD GO ONLY TO U.S.CITIZENS: tax-supported healthcare, tax-supported education, social security, medicaid, Medicare, tax-supported housing, food stamps, welfare income, tax refunds, and earned income tax credits.

They are here ILLEGALLY! How can they be eligible for benefits. Fix immigration, make everyone enter legally and apply for citizenship or send them home.

Availability of programs like Social Security to non-citizens is part of what draws them here and causes problems. Social Security and similar programs should only serve citizens.

Many American industries, including agriculture and industry, run off the backs of undocumented and disenfranchised workers - who often work in unsafe and exploitative conditions. They need access to more safety nets, not fewer.

If they are unauthorized they shouldn't be given or have access to anything like this at all.

This is common sense, illegals shouldn't take priority over Americans.

People who pay into social security deserve to have it. And, coming from a background having met many undocumented people, they probably work harder for less.

Social Security is NOT a gift from the government for American Senior Citizens. It is an earned and paid for benefit. The government has no business doling it out to those who have not paid in. It is not their money. This is money we paid in from our checks and many of us paid in for almost 50 years! Our spouses paid in almost 50 years as well. I have lost two husbands who paid in and one husband never even saw one check. I paid in, so 3 people paid in and only I am left to receive benefits since my 2nd husband died 5 years after retiring. I certainly don't get mine and theirs. If you Ted Cruz want to get a leg up on Trump talk address this issue for the seniors. The government has been stealing our SS money and have not intention of putting it back. In fact they now want to punish us by cutting our benefits by raising Medicare and not giving us a cost of living allowance and deleting Social Security all together. Isn't that what they went after Jimmy Hoffa for? Spending someones paid for pension?.

I would not want to reward breaking the law. Also, I prefer most anything that works to change the culture of an entitlement society to a more merit-based society.
