Should the Equal Pay Act be Strengthened to Reduce the Wage Gap?

Argument in favor

Women should receive equal pay for equal work, but in too many cases they get paid significantly less than their male peers do in the same role. The federal government needs to crack down on employers who pay women less.

We must differentiate between "equal pay for equal work" and "pay according to ability, experience, and education." All else being equal, there is NO reason women should not be paid the same as a man for doing the same job.

The sheer fact that a gender pay gap still exists is appalling. (And yes "Zach" and "Adam", it does exist, though I can't feign shock that the two most blatant white males on here are insisting it does not). The fact that there is any opposition to this bill is the proof that it is needed. *UPDATE* "Mason" and "Geoff" also oppose this. I can't make this stuff up. We just need a Connor, Parker, and "John [insert second name here]" to round this thing out. *UPDATE* I would like to welcome "Patrick", "Derek" and "Jake" to this meeting of the HeMan Woman Haters Club. Wait...even they had a black guy. Sorry. Y'all are still just privileged white dudes. *UPDATE* "Drew","Ryan" and "Lucas" are throwing in their expertise on the lack of a wage gap. Way to stand for the resistance, guys. White men forevah, amiright?! *UPDATE* And we are joined now by "Kyle" "Austin" "Owen" and an older white gentleman going by - I kid you not - "operaman". They sneer at your silly equal pay requests from the balcony, peasants. *UPDATE* "Noah" "Will" "Mark" and "Tyler" glad you could join us on this edition of "Reasons Women are Always Wrong". *UPDATE* "Mathew", "Louis",and "Jaizon" (he's white, I checked. Which I can only assume means his nursery decor was camo and deer themed) are also apparently ardent Dudebro, Inc members. *UPDATE* So glad "Brian" "Brett" "Josh" and "Ken" chimed in. Thanks, fellas. Always making sure we women aren't doing crazy things like thinking and fact checking. Y'all da real MVPs.

Yes and the wage gap should be further broken down not just across genders but also for POC men and women.

Argument opposed

There are plenty of reasons that one employee might make more money than another — including education, experience, and training. Wage disparities are often the result of differences in people’s abilities, not gender discrimination.

The wage gap doesn't exist. Do some actual research. - I would like to elaborate: for the same work, men and women are payed the same, but the total ratio of all male to all female earnings is 100/77. What that means is women take lower paying jobs on average, not that they're payed less for the same job.

The wage gap is a myth, the 77 cents to every dollar line is wrong it's closer to 98 cents to every dollar. Women are not being paid less for equal work, that's illegal. *EDIT* for everyone claiming the wage gap exists, look up how it's calculated. They simply take the gross wages of men and women, not accounting for the fact that men work on average more hours than women do. Do your homework guys.

The government need not intervene in private business. Micromanagement where a problem simply doesn't exist is not, and never should be, the governments duty.

The wage gap for not only women, but people of color, people with disabilities, and more have experienced conscious and unconscious bias in salary. We need to take measures to prevent this inequality and decrease the wage gap.

This should be an automatic yes, unfortunately our legislature has repeatedly voted against common sense (see previous legislation regarding shooting innocent animals in their dens). You don't get to discriminate against someone who is equally qualified simply for lacking a penis.

Why are we even having this discussion in 2017? There should be no doubt that they should be equal between men and women we're doing the same job. It is ridiculous that this is not the standard. If you do the same job you should get the same pay regardless of your sex. That is just fair. This argument should have been put to rest decades ago. What is wrong with our culture that we are still so

I'm a democrat, I voted for Hillary, but this nonsense needs to stop. There is no wage gap. When controlling for education, work ethic, hours worked, etc etc; the wage gap becomes 97-98 cents on the dollars which is within the statistical margin of error. There is no wage gap.

Wow. Just wow. I don't really like the idea of Countable becoming a site where participants go at each other instead of addressing the issues and our representatives, so no names here. However, I think in order to make my case I need to respectfully also point out what others have mentioned. Of course it seems to be predominantly the smug angry white male crowd who is taking issue with equal pay and gender equality. (Oh shoot! I just described my representatives! Darn it!) The one thing I learned in statistics all those years ago is your answers depend largely upon your questions and what you choose to look at. So yeah, you can make the numbers say anything, and that goes for both sides. I do believe a wage gap exists and I base my position not on statistics alone but on observations and real life experiences. If no wage gap or gender bias in the workplace exists why do women keep winning law suits? Hmm... I'm sure it's just a liberal communist plot on the part of the mean old judicial system. Right guys? Seriously though, the wage gap is just one piece of a much bigger and very frustrating puzzle. It isn't just equal pay for equal work at play here. It's equal opportunity for advancement or overtime or even to land the better paying jobs in the first place. It's how women are too often treated at work and in society. It's the myriad of ways women are held back and pushed down every day by a patriarchal society that privileged white men don't recognize because they have never been victimized by it in the way women and people of color routinely are and because they flat out don't want to. I'm not sure how to fix that, but if we as a nation ever hope to reach our potential we surely need to try harder. The current system is inherently unfair and no statistics in the world will ever convince those of us who suffer under the weight of it any differently. After reading the details of the bill my question is why are the nay voters so riled up? It isn't as if this bill comes close to guaranteeing women are going to receive the pay raises many deserve. It just says we should be paid fairly and establishes some basic criteria for determining whether that's happening. So if the contention of the nay sayers is correct and there is no actual pay gap then what's going to change and what are they worried about? Sounds a bit like just maybe the nays aren't exactly confident of the validity their quoted statistics or their position and are afraid some woman somewhere might be about to get a bigger piece of the pie they've been saving for themselves all these years. Representatives, it is your job to at least give us that chance. Support all of your constituents by supporting this bill.

If men and women are equally qualified they should make the same amount of money for the same job. It is our responsibility to make sure that businesses are held accountable to ensure equal pay.

The wage gap is a misinterpreted statistic, any research into it more than none at all proves that. Averaging all men's salaries vs all women's salaries gets you the 80/100 figure we hear every day but doesn't account for any other factors. Men and women get paid the same for the same work, but there are not equal amounts of men and women in every field. "Strengthening legislation" will not affect this statistic and is a waste of time. Women need to choose different career paths if "the wage gap" is going to change. Please do your research people. https://www.google.com/amp/www.theblaze.com/news/2017/03/06/watch-new-video-puts-the-wage-gap-myth-in-the-grave-once-and-for-all/amp/
