house Bill H.R. 1812

Establishing the Western Hemisphere Drug Policy Commission

Argument in favor

The Commission would provide Congress with greater insight on which parts of the U.S. drug policy are working and which parts aren't.

If the commission is independent and included academics who specialize in the social side effects, not just criminal codes and special interests, the commission could be of value. If the commission is going to be made up of the same law enforcement agencies whose whole existence is dependent on the most draconian law enforcement policies you can't get an unbiased review of what works and what doesn't. They will just double down on what they already do.

End the war on drugs if not all, at least marijuana because prohibition and always been proven to fail and costs millions if not Billions to enforce and makes a lucrative business for organized crime.

Argument opposed

It's unclear why a new commission is needed; aren't the DEA, ICE, FBI, and DHS already required to report on this issue?

Oh, sure! Just what we DON'T need: more overpaid bureaucrats watching porn and/or doing yoga and pumping breastmilk at work on our dime! We have several agencies already that should be carrying out this function! If they aren't, We the People want to know WHY NOT! As if the war on drugs has been such a roaring success! IF you care about the drug epidemic in America, CLOSE OFF OUR BORDERS, DECLARE SANCTUARY CITIES ILLEGAL AND IMPOSE HEAVY PENALTIES ON THEM, ROUND UP AND DEPORT ILLEGAL ALIENS AND QUIT GIVING AID TO NATIONS THAT SUPPORT THE GROWING OF CROPS SUCH AS POPPIES AND COCA PLANTS AND NATIONS THAT AID DRUG CARTEL ACTIVITIES!

So we're going to double down on the war on drugs and put together a commission to give congress information that's readily available from agencies already in place. Why not just ask for a briefing from said agencies? Instead of re-inventing the wheel, how about rolling on the ones you already have? Finding overly complicated ways to do what's already being taken care of is why congress accomplishes nothing!

There are a lot of agencies that are looking into this matter daily, we don't need another commission to research and study the effectiveness of drug policies. We don't need more money spent on an unneeded commission.

Proliferation of agencies to overlap what dysfunctional existing ones are failing to do is not smart management.

No need to spend more tax payers money since we already have so many other agencies that are already doing this.

Not without a cost assessment. We are needing to cut spending. We need to know.

Oh yeah...that should work. 55 federal agencies can't solve the problem...why does we need another. WE DON'T!

What? More bureaucracy? Has not the idea of "limited Government" suffered a serious misinterpretation? Unclear why a new commission is needed;aren't the DEA, ICE, FBI, and DHS already required to report on this issue?

We already have alphabet soup running drugs. Eliminate most of these agencies and increase oversight and transparency on the remaining ones
