Should the FAA Study Ways to Improve Flight Hazard Notices for Pilots?

NOTAMs contain critical safety information that pilots should have before they take off. However, at present, they’re difficult to read and use, which negates their usefulness. Studying them will help the FAA make NOTAMs into a more useful tool for pilots.

I see more potential good than bad in this legislation. Having the best information available, presented in a way that is quick to access, prioritized and easy to understand should be a useful tool for pilots- who would be much more likely to check NOTAMs if they were quick and easy. I would think this would be something that the FAA could and should be doing without legislation. I repeat, Congress really has to begin dealing with things are at a higher level in order to focus on the big issues facing us. If something falls inherently within the charter on an agency that requires little to no funding, ask the agency to do it and periodically monitor to see if they did. Then use the power of the budget to ‘correct’ agencies who ignore Congressional directives. Too much teeny-tiny legislative acts takes way too much attention from tackling big problems. I’m sure congress people like to have their name on these bills in order to get election year ‘creds’ - but it is both wasteful and distracting.

Pilots should have an app that syncs to their schedule, so that they can get the vital notices that specifically relate to their flight. The notices should be easy to read & be part of every pilots pre-flight procedure. With the technology we have today, this should not be difficult. I don’t understand what needs to be studied? Can’t the improvements just be made with input from pilots, mechanics, air controllers??

NOTAMs can always be improved, making it easier for pilots to recognize certain obstacles they may encounter while in flight. I recommend everyone votes Yea on this bill.
Argument opposed
Pilots and people who fly often already aren’t in the habit of checking NOTAMs, so improving the NOTAM system is of little use. There’s no point in improving a system that isn’t routinely used by the people it’s aimed at.

Do pilots really read these before flights? I truly doubt it. Another waste of Congress’ time when there are more important issues to address.
Return immigrant children to families and close costly detention centers permanently.
Reduce interest rates to 1% over Prime to encourage better access to higher education.
Pass the 2100 Social Security Act to save Social Security.
Increase minimum wage to reduce poverty; salary should cover actual living expenses. $7.25 an hour will not.

This is a very important issue that needs some study. Improving infrastructure includes the airways that have thousands of people on at any given hour. Pilots need new technologies and techniques to become better stewards of the sky.
Yes, it sounds like the entire Notices to Airmen process should be improved and this would be one area of improvement.
I believe Boeing’s actions and crashes have made the need for this clear. The FAA is supposed to police the corporations.
Nearly everyone is commenting suggesting that it is the burden of the *airline* to provide a better NOTAM parsing system. They seem to have an assumption that only airline pilots use the NOTAM system. All pilots use the NOTAM system. Even private pilots who fly as a passion or for work related travel.
There is no such thing as, “enough,” when it comes to our safety when traveling via airports.
NOTAMs should be useful and not ignored. Researching a solution first is definitely the right move.
This is supposed to be the safest way to travel. Let’s work to improve here and anywhere else high standards are lacking.
These days I am always pleased to support anything which will make things better.
