Does a National Prescription Drug Monitoring System Need Reauthorization?

Argument in favor

The systems that are in place provide a valuable tool for those who are dispensing and prescribing medication to help prevent addiction and abuse. They need to be reauthorized and improved, not allowed to expire.

This program should be re-authorized. The money comes. From the Federal government, them goes to the States. As long as there is some Federal oversight as to how each State is using the money, there shouldn't be a problem. We must stop the practice of "doctor shopping" for good. The drug epidemic in each State is much worse than most people know. This issue must be addressed now because we are losing the younger generation to drugs and the lack of education.

Billions of dollars in prescription medications are funneled into the black market by miscreants. The more we can do to stop this leak, the better.

Definitely. As long as I can search the internet on my iMac to see what drugs my neighbors or co-workers are taking. It's, let the state take of monitoring

Argument opposed

These programs shouldn’t continue to be administered at the state level, the federal government needs to consolidate all of this information under its authority.

Keep the government out of medicine, that's what drives up the cost.

This has only been more of a hassle for the people who are not addicts and need their medication. Especially for terminally ill patients whom are on several pain medications. The pharmacy only will release them to patient since they have to present ID.

What my Doctor prescribes me and when without fear of the DEA kicking down my doctors door, is between me and my doctor.

The war on drugs caused this mess. What genius thinks more government regulation on any level will make it better? Besides, there are many Americans who suffer from chronic pain. Draconian measures just make it harder for them to get adequate treatment. Nothing will improve until we stop filling our prisons with drug offenders & focus on rehabilitation. The punitive approach has failed. Excessive policing has failed. The current approach to regulation is clearly not working. Could you guys just back off & not pee on this wall? I'm certain there are smart people in the U.S. (Dr Carl Hart, for one) who could figure this out. None of them appear to be employed by federal or state government in any capacity.

These laws punish those with chronic pain issues. Legalize marijuana, it's an excellent pain reliever and non-addictive. Many people who are using prescription pain killers can switch, save money & hassles with their doctors. Some people are going to abuse things no matter what they are, be it alcohol, pain meds, tobacco or whatever.

Taking $43 and lighting it on fire would accomplish just as much. The problem with drugs isn't a lack of government bureaucracy. The problem with drugs is drugs. Leave the money in the people's pockets and see if they don't improve their own lot with it. Kill it.

Too much Unum... Not enough Pluribus. States rights should be secondary when it comes to issues that effect all citizens. A patchwork quilt of disparate regulations is not going to help anyone, and leaves the door open for science deniers and zealots to push through discriminatory legislation.

Let the market decide what is best. Like any product, pharmaceutical corps tell the consumer all possible side effects and let the consumer decide the plusses and minuses.

These records are better kept and utilized on a State level. Expecting everything to be consolidated and disseminated by the Federal government to too unwieldy and slow.

I had surgery a while back and I tossed the useless pain pills. Honestly over the counter has more power. Ever had your stomach and intestines cut open and sent home with what they are allowed to prescribe? Let me tell you, if you had, you would never have allowed this.

Don't get me wrong, I believe that the effort has merit, but the costs are extremely high. I am a true believer that before you renew a program/effort, there should be a measure of success to review. Not really a fan of opinions. I rather see the facts.
