house Bill H.R. 1700

Should Mexican Drug Cartels Be Designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations?

Argument in favor

Designating Mexican drug cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) will help law enforcement access new tools in the fight against the drugs and violence these organizations bring into the U.S. and allow the Treasury Secretary to block their assets.

Cartels absolutely meet the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Definition of Terrorism: “The unlawful use of force (yes) or violence against persons (yes) or property (yes) to intimidate (yes) or coerce (yes) a government (yes both the USA & México), the civilian population (yes), or any segment thereof (yes), in furtherance of political or social objectives (yes).”

👍🏻”House Bill H.R 1700 AKA the “Drug Cartel Terrorist Designation Act” I’m in full support of and recommend the passage of the House Bill H.R 1700 AKA the “Drug Cartel Terrorist Designation Act” which would designate three specific Mexican drug cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). This Bill would have the effect of: 1). Making it illegal for anyone to assist cartels or their employees, 2). Blocking all identified cartel personnel from legally entering the U.S., 3). Allowing the Treasury Secretary to block all cartel assets, and 4).”Furthering the “Stigmatizing” of cartels none only at home but also abroad specifically along the “South American Corridor” from Columbia, El Salvador & Venezuela Designating Mexican drug cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) will help law enforcement access new tools in the fight against the drugs and violence these organizations bring into the U.S. and allow the Treasury Secretary to block their assets. Might as well call them what they are. They may not terrorize in the traditional sense of the word, but they are still terroristic.

Argument opposed

Under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act, drug cartels are already subject to many of the same restrictions as FTOs. In that context, labeling drug cartels as FTOs is unnecessary. It’s also an inaccurate label given that cartels are motivated by money, not ideology (as terrorist organizations are).

No. Labeling a drug cartel as terrorist to unleash the dogs of war will likely bring our military into another Vietnam-style war in Central America and South America. This loose definition of Terrorism is being leveraged too often to justify political motives to enable militarism that targets an individual or group. While a terrorist commits criminal offenses, not all criminals are terrorists.

No I don’t think so. This would only serve to rebrand our current war on drugs which has and continues to fail miserably. It would likely also serve as a pretext to attack and incarcerate immigrants with no association with cartels. Bad idea but sounds seductive if you believe it’s possible to stop people from consuming drugs — I don’t. We’ve been at war with drugs for decades and we have more users than ever and we have the largest and faster growing market even after spending Billions to stop it. Wake up people doing the same thing expecting a different outcome is what???! Insane.

For Christ’s sake, just end the drug war already! That’s what gives incredible power to these drug cartels since it forces people to acquire drugs through illegal means. Labeling drug cartels as terrorist organizations is a massive distortion of what terrorism means to begin with. When is the federal government going to label the KKK and neo-Nazis as terrorist organizations?

The only rebranding to terrorists right now needs to be applied to the current Administration. A drug cartel is a drug cartel, not a terrorist organization. They are not political. They just wish to get their products through to the US which the government is making easier by this stupidity at the border rather than concentrating on the ports of call.

They are all labeled as drug cartels already and subject to pretty much all of that anyway. SO WHAT IS THE POINT?!?! Sounds to me like another way of demonizing people to stir up the xenophobic.

Cartels only exist because of our senseless and costly “War on Drugs”. End the War on Drugs and Cartels have no reason to exist. Just as Capone was to Prohibition, Cartels are to the Prohibition of Drugs. It’s time we progress as a society in treating Drug abuse as a medical condition, not an act that deserves punishment. Peace!

I’m fully supporting this, why aren’t drug cartels already designated as terrorist organizations? They are as lethal as ISIS or Al Queda possibly more so as they have more access to drug sale proceeds. Congress get on it now! #MAGA

Terrorists are politically motivated. Cartels are money motivated. They are both criminal, yet different. This is just another bill by a white male Republican that is trying to label more brown people as terrorists. The KKK and neo-nazis are the ones who need added to the terrorists lists. If you want to address the drug problem then legalize them, tax them, and use the taxes to pay for treatment. The war on drugs is a failure, but treatment works.

Focus on decriminalization of drugs, regulation and taxation with some of the proceeds going to harm reduction programs will do more damage than this. We want to defund them and shrink their share of the black market. Making war with them just raises the stakes while doing nothing to alter the incentives or curb our demand for what they are selling.

You’re asking whether we should further demonize all brown people? Make up more reasons to imprison them? Terrorists in this country are so-called ‘white’ men, not Brown Men. The private prison industry is shameful and out of control. What kind of country imprisons its citizens for profit?

Isn’t that what they really are anyway. They kill people to make money. They sell heroin, cocaine and sex trafficking. I would think that’s enough.

Drug cartels meet the definition of a terrorist organization so yes let’s do the logical thing here. Their race or gender have nothing to do with it. The Democraps will be screaming about this because it will most likely put a huge dent in their campaign funding. Just imagine our special forces taking out a kingpin and capturing all their books and records. Then we’ll get to see which American politicians are on their payroll. It’s about time we go after them directly even if it turns out to be an all out war. We need to stop the flood of drugs into our country and as we can see from the Democrap reaction to the wall it becomes very obvious the Democraps are on the take. MAGA!!! Build the wall already and change the bad immigration laws!
