Should the U.S. Adopt Permanent Daylight Saving Time to Eliminate the Need to ‘Spring Forward’ & ‘Fall Back’?

Argument in favor

Making Daylight Saving Time permanent across the U.S. would simplify Americans’ lives by ending the practice of resetting clocks twice a year to “spring forward” and “fall back”, which could yield benefits in terms of reduced health risks and increased economic activity.

Yes, this system was put in place to preserve agricultural and retail interests decades ago, and it serves no purpose now that children don't work in the fields and people can shop online whenever they want. Let's stop this unhealthy and anti-science system of changing the clocks and stay in the same time year round.

Now I’ve answered this for the 98th time! The US should pick a time standard and stick with the bloody plan. Most of Europe has already done away with the two times and parts of Canada are standard time year round. Hawaii and Arizona have done away with it and other states are considering it. When someone asks for the time I’d really prefer not to answer where? @ Rassilon6. The argument of it should stay the same because we are used to it is quite flawed. Not only does it poorly effect millions of citizens’ mental health and sleep patterns, some studies show and increase in some mental illnesses such as Depressive disorders and Bipolar diagnoses. Additionally Daylight Savings Time use only began in the US March 31 1916 for the purpose of saving fuel for electrical production during WWI. Your agrarian theory is off. In Ben’s time, they worked and studied from the time the Sun came up until the time it went down. Useful time.

Really!?.......We have had this same conversation FOR YEARS!.........Changing back and forth is STUPID......It's like throwing everybody in Jet Lag at once......bet production is down and "accidents" on the job and on the highway are UP until EVERYONE re-regulates their internal clock.....If golf courses want hours changed to make economic use of summer hours.....let them change THEIR hours....NOT the entire area. Side note: In the 80s I was listening to a radio station and the topic of the day was....Daylight Savings.....for and against. One lady (and this is true) called in and said "I don't want more daylight.....my lawn's burning up now!"........Yeah, that's what I thought too.

Argument opposed

The current time system with eight months of Daylight Saving Time and time changes in March and November isn’t that challenging to abide by. There aren’t enough definitive benefits to year-round Daylight Saving Time to justify the transition.

Just keep up on Standard Time year around. Stick with the normal time as related to the sun and the earth’s revolutions... stop switching to the unnatural time.

I am a little bit torn on this. For me personally, the biannual clock adjustments and reorientation of my diurnal cycles are a pain that I personally do not like. However, that's just me. I have lived at the extreme Eastern edge of a time zone and at the extreme Western edge. Kids going to school on either end would be forced to either walk to school in darkness or come home in darkness as school days tend to track normal work hours- and that does concern me some; particularly when we can get all of our students back to in-class and in-person learning. I am fairly certain that many more school systems will be operating on longer in-class days with staggered schedules to assure that viral spread is minimized. (Even if we had a super effective and proven safe vaccine available today which could be rapidly distributed, it will take at least a year to get it to all of our people who need it -and take at least three years to suppress the virus worldwide to prevent new deadly strains from developing elsewhere and re-infecting everyone). SO, I am going to punt on this issue because I do have concerns for kids walking to or from school in darkness that I am not sure how to resolve.

@Frank-001: Agree there is more important legislation like passing HEROES to address problems caused by Covid-19 to the people & economy of this country. Also agree with the pros & cons of most posters on this issue. The only serious consideration is the energy savings of this inconvenient arrange originally conceived of by Benjamin Franklin but not implemented till WWI to conserve resources nor quantified till the 1970s oil crisis where it was determined it saved 1% of energy usage. Now we have solar & wind options that can replace that and more as an option. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/does-daylight-saving-times-save-energy/

Yes, please stop the twice a year madness of switching clocks. I just drove from Nevada to Utah and back this weekend. AZ, is between the two, they don’t observe Daylight Savings time. We kept a asking each other, “What time is it?” Ugh!!!

Yes as it's kind of nuts to go through this a couple of times per year and it should be scrapped.

Yes if needed to stop the current lunacy of changing to Fake time twice, but I see no reason not to just repeal DST as time does not change. The is an Indian Saying I once where a Chief was asked about it , and replied-only Congress would think that cutting 6 inches off of the top of a Blanket and putting it on the bottom makes it longer.
