Should the Office of Congressional Ethics be Made Permanent?

Argument in favor

Unethical behavior by members of Congress has cropped up repeatedly in recent years. It’s important to ensure that there’s a non-legislative, non-partisan body investigating allegations against members of Congress and their staff when ethics violations are suspected.

Yes! We have plenty to keep it busy! You couldn’t find ethics in Washington if you had two black hole event arrays pointed at it! Needs to cover all three branches of government however and have real teeth!

Yes, ethics in Washington is an embarrassment. We need a permanent, bipartisan, and independent overseer of both Congressional and Executive ethics with real power to investigate, expose, and enforce ethical behaviors.

Ethics never go out of fashion. GOP breaks all the rules and wants to hide all the evidence of their wrong doing from the American people. Vote these lying pieces of shit out of office.

Argument opposed

The Office of Congressional Ethics doesn’t need to be an independent body to do its job investigating ethics complaints against House members. This is especially true given that OCE refers investigations to the House Ethics Committee for final decisions in most cases, anyway.

We need: 1. Less government 2. Total transparency 3. Severe consequences for members of government which violate the oath of office 4. Strict laws for members of government prohibiting things such as influence peddling, profiteering, subversion, etc.

As nice as this sounds, having a permanent “ethics” committee, in reality it would become a political tool and weaponized for the purposes of gotcha politics. So bottom line is “who would watch the watchers” so to speak? No in reality this idea sucks.

Why should it? Nothing happens when they find corruption. Rep Maxine Waters is the most corrupt politician (it’s been substantiated) and yet she’s head of House Financial Services committee. It would be hilarious if weren’t true.

Yes but give it teeth since there seems to be plenty to keep it busy. A lack of enforcement capability and equal bipartisan representation is also key to prevent untoward political games.

Amazing that the OCE isn’t already permanent! Washington is corrupt to the bone! Washington politicians believe that there’s one rule for them and another for everyone else. We need to make sure that these corrupt actions don’t go unpunished!

👍🏻HALLERAN (D)👍🏻 “HOUSE BILL H.R.1464 AKA the “CLEAN ACT” 👍🏻 I’d recommend and support the passage of the HOUSE BILL H.R. 1464 AKA the “CLEAN ACT” which would make the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) a permanent body, protecting it from politically motivated changes and giving it the tools it needs (including subpoena power equivalent to a House standing committee) to investigate ethics violations by members of Congress. Unethical behavior by members of Congress has cropped up repeatedly in recent years. It’s important to ensure that there’s a non-legislative, non-partisan body investigating allegations against members of Congress and their staff when ethics violations are suspected. The ethics in our government have catastrophically declined with the majority of the Republican Party behaving as dictators by preventing an actual vote in the Senate, packing the court with political operatives, and generally suppressing the will of the people they were elected to serve, #45 and his followers have corrupted the government purposely. We need ethics now.

We desperately need a permanent ethics committee! As corporate America has more and more influence over our politicians, The People are having less and less. Stop the corruption!

YES! And they need to work in three shifts and on weekends! Relentless! Then we might actually attract the kind of people we need in office.

The American people want truth, transparency, and morals. All elected officials should be held accountable and be removed from office for violations.

Yes, there needs to be an outside ethics review. Apparently, with all of the corruption and unethical acts and behaviors, the House Ethics Committee is not performing well and address by all of the issues. Need checks and balances.
