Does More Research Need to be Done to Prevent Opioid Abuse Among Pregnant Mothers?

Argument in favor

As heroin and other opioids have become more widely available, the prevalence of abuse by pregnant mothers has increased — tragically harming their unborn children. Increased research would allow for a better-informed strategy to combat this growing threat.

I'm in favor of spending money to prevent the financial and emotional cost of drug addicted newborns. These costs are lifetime costs for all affected especially these innocent babies. Please fund.

Pay attention! This is not rocket science. (Or even climate change about which you admittedly know nothing!) Why don't you fund women's healthcare, make contraception widely & affordably available, raise the minimum wage, mandate maternal leave, provide affordable child care & early childhood education. If all you family values Christians really valued families at all, you would know this already! You cannot stack the deck against women in every area that is essential to their well being and the pretend to be mystified when women who are trapped in poverty & hopelessness use drugs. Get a life & talk to your wives. They know this stuff just as well as any other American woman.

Argument opposed

The sad truth of this situation is that there will always be drug abuse that negatively impacts the health of mothers and their unborn or infant children. It is unrealistic to think that the government will eliminate it, so those efforts should be left to private groups.

As terrible as the issue is, this research should be done by a private group rather than funded by tax payers especially with a growing national deficit/debt.

Are we sure are ready that it's a bad thing? Why not put that money in something that we could use like helping veterans come back for war? PTSD? Childhood cancers? Adult cancers?

This would be just another example of government waste on a problem that should be addressed by the private sector.

This looks like another anti-woman bill that criminalizes behavior. Perhaps more spending on women's health in general would be better, along with opening up access to better prenatal care and abortion, better sex education in the schools. Sadly, a certain percentage of the population will always become addicts no matter what anyone does or doesn't do.

This dangerously assumes that any opioid use during pregnancy is harmful which is not true. Opioids are sometimes used as their side effects are much less dangerous to the mother and the fetus than other medications. This is simply a bill to criminalize women who are pregnant and either struggle with addiction or suffer from an ailment that may require the use of opioids.

Nothing will stop a woman or man from taking their fix. Not even pregnancy. You would have to sterilize all drug users and that's not going to happen.

The doctors who prescribe medication should be the first line of defense. As for the heroin abuse, well that's just plain obvious!!!

If citizens can protest for the protection of an unborn child, they should be willing to demand the proper healthcare and rehabilitation programs to ensure children are healthy upon their arrival into this Earth. Addiction is a serious problem and we should be researching as much as possible to understand how to help those afflicted.

By the time an addicted mother is pregnant, it's far to late for research.
