house Bill H.R. 133

The $1.4 Trillion Omnibus Spending Bill for FY2021 Plus a $900 Billion COVID-19 Relief Package

Argument in favor

It’s not perfect, but this bipartisan bill would fund the federal government for the rest of FY2021 and provide much needed relief from the coronavirus pandemic to Americans, including stimulus checks, loans for small businesses, grants for shuttered venues, and healthcare funding that will aid the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Too little and for some way too late. You all should be ashamed. We bailed out banks, Wall Street and the car manufacturers. Not to mention the billions in subsidies to oil & coal. But, god forbid we help regular people who should have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps or gotten a loan from their parents. This is a typical republican ’fuck you , I got mine’ mentality. The GOP would sell their own mothers if it meant they made them a nickel. Let’s face it, neither party is great, but the republicans are the new and improved Dixiecrats.

<< 29 days, 11 hours, 54 minutes >>. … … … The relief portion is minimal and will have to be augmented when Biden takes office. The trade stuff and international relations aspects are welcome and needed. Our country is much stronger and relevant as a world-partner with allies and with purpose. Trade relations can and should be win-win mutually beneficial enhancements to each partner. Issues of inequity can be best resolved diplomatically to find alternate win-win solutions. Thus works so much better than sledgehammer might-makes-right diplomacy. Currently we are spending huge funds to subsidize the farmers for markets lost to ineffective trade wars, markets that may never fully come back. … … … I spent much of my life building things and it is clear that any building that is strong and elegant is often viewed from the perspective of it’s surface, elegant roof lines, ornamentation, gold leafed domes and subtle color schemes. What any builder knows is that none of that stuff counts if the building does not have a strong and solid foundation, efficient adequate internal utilities for managing power, water, sewage and for moving people up and down. It has to have solid fire protection and for high rise buildings the ability to avoid swaying upper floors, withstand furious weather extremes and earthquakes. … … … Our country is a lot like this glorious building. The problem is that our trumpublicans are way too preoccupied with the gold leaf roof and the ornamentation that is our very visible wealthy elite - and they have dismissed the solid foundation and support utilities which are our workers, teachers and generally our everyday folk. Our experts understand the hazards that our building faces and must withstand, they develop the systems that efficiently integrate the piece-parts of our building to protect the building overall, just as our country’s climate, environmental, epidemiological, other scientists and other experts like economists do. Our beautiful building would also be fairly useless without essential services provided from outside it’s wall. To be economically viable, skilled negotiators have reach agreements with external service providers, just like our diplomats do for our country to represent our needs and arrive at equitable agreements with other counties. … … … Ok, that is a long analogy but the point is that our great building cannot function properly without a strong foundation, effective utilities, expert safety systems and outside connections - just like our country cannot function to its potential without a strong working class, solid support services, expert driven protections and strong relations with other countries. Right now, our trumpublicans are only focused on protecting the gold leaf and fancy visible ornamentation that our wealthy elite represent but they cannot persist without keeping the rest of the country strong, enabled and prepared- not providing the relief needed is like letting our beautiful building’s foundation and support service systems rot. … … … Relief is needed to protect the core elements of our country so the rest can be rebuilt and maintained - and even the wealthy can continue to shine, along with everyone else who may not be as visible.

Argument opposed

Congress should consider the FY2021 funding bills and the coronavirus relief measures separately. Combining them into a massive 5,593 page, $2.3 trillion package that’s publicly available for less than a day prior to a vote is an irresponsible affront to transparency and good governance.

You all need to be ashamed of yourselves! You keep giving out money to the obscenely rich and their corporations - even to mega churches. And you give the people who pay your salaries a lousy $600? You can put it where the sun don’t shine, and if you are not helping the middle class, I will vote for your opponent, even if you’re running against a monkey, from now on.

$600 is an insult to every struggling American, and you should be ashamed for “compromising”. The Republican Party has held this country hostage for far too long. Not until US born students are given the same access to higher education funding. We have a nation of under employed wage slaves who should receive priority access, and this bill would send American students to the back of the line. No, a grant for 1000 documented Latino students 1st would be a compromise.

$600?!? $600? Is this supposed to be a fucking joke? Our government refuses to send financial help for months, and then when they do, they only give us $600? The average person who was protected from getting evicted is in debt by $5,000 and is about to lose their protection, and the government is going to give them *$600.?* There are people lining up at 4 am and standing in the freezing cold for almost 12 hours 3-4 times a week to get BASIC NECESSITIES from food pantries so they can feed their children, and they get *$600?* There are people who used to have good paying jobs who are living on the streets right now. There are single mothers *starving themselves* just to give their kids something to eat. There are people who’ve lost their primary bread winner because of COVID, and *they’re all getting $600??* Christ, what the hell has our country come to? The government can invest billions into *weaponizing space* but can only give us all $600 to survive a global pandemic that’s caused record job loss.

It’s a starting point that can be adjusted. At least there is a budget and Covid Relief until the transition is complete. I suspect both sides wanted something that covers their basic concerns as no one is sure at this point which party will control the Senate. Positives are funding for Covid Vaccine rollout, housing assistance, PPP Loan replenishment limiting loans to companies of 300 employees or less and needing to disclose if officers are related to Congress. Negatives are the low dollar amounts to individuals for both unemployment & stimulus check as I don’t see how anyone can live on this, and limiting Federal Reserve tools in dealing with the Fed.

You’re giving more to private institutions, other countries, military contracts, than you are to the American populace. This is disgraceful. We need a moratorium on rent, back pay for the past 6 months without stimulus, and at the bare minimum $2,500 a month until the economy fully reopens. Anything less is a sham to the American public and a stain to the legacy of the politicians who vote for this bloated bill that provides nothing of substance to the American people.

We are funding a bill which is 5000+ pages long that contains all kind of bs including new copyright infringement laws. And because it at the last hour, it has to get pass for Republicans and Democrats to have a fight in Georgia run off. This is a joke. New Zealand, Italy, Germany, Canada all pass real help and we get $600 one time for those making $75000 individually and 150000 for married couples. Oh and $600 for kids, a slight increase for the last CARE bill. Yes, public transportation, movie theaters, small businesses get help (along with so many other) but not enough. New Zealand gave it citizens $600 a week, we in America get it once. Our government continue to fail us while corporation now get our tax money and the ability to get tax free PPP and claim it as expenses. What a world we live in.

To little to late, but better than nothing. jimK, you've talked endlessly about ‘word processor legislation’ and at 5593 pages, this is it. My gosh, haven’t y’all read the damn thing yet??! jimK, I also have to agree with your ‘longer’ than long years and what are we in for over the next 30 days. My WORST wasn’t far from this, but even now, not sure I would have ever thought of most of this fictional farce! I’ve already seen many limits I would have felt taboo, being openly discussed. Only TIME will tell! Wish we weren’t pushing this on you Georgia (damn, I’ve TRIED to get rid of Cruz/Cornyn, not to mention Brady in last two elections), but please VOTE BLUE!! We are going to need more funds in the future, and if moscow mitch is still in charge (why else allow THIS vote??), there will be NO MONEY FOR U.S./US.

Helping the American people - I’m all for it. Giving millions to other countries and states and cities for their pet projects - NO. There was so much nonsense in this bill. I am disappointed in Congress and their inability to comprehend what business owners and lower/middle income families are going through. You know what I would support 100%? Term limits!

The crumbs in this kitchen sink legislation is what most will get. This is what is likely to happen in the coming months: "Republicans are preparing to reembrace their inner deficit hawks after greenlighting big spending bills under President Trump. GOP senators say they expect to refocus on curbing the nation's debt and reforming entitlement programs starting in 2021, as the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the debt has surpassed the size of the American economy." https://thehill.com/homenews/news/527197-republicans-ready-to-become-deficit-hawks-again-under-a-president-biden Georgia, Vote Blue Times Two!

Reported on Politico with other sources reporting the same anti-democracy effort to deprive voters: “President Donald Trump huddled with a group of congressional Republicans at the White House on Monday, where they strategized over a last-ditch effort to overturn the election results next month, according to several members who attended the meeting. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) — who is spearheading the long-shot push to overturn the election results in Congress — organized the trio of White House meetings, which lasted over three hours and included roughly a dozen lawmakers. The group also met with Vice President Mike Pence, who will be presiding over the joint session of Congress when lawmakers officially certify the Electoral College votes on Jan. 6, as well as members of Trump’s legal team. “It was a back-and-forth concerning the planning and strategy for January the 6th,” Brooks said in a phone interview. In addition to the “dozens” of House Republicans who are committed to objecting to the election results, Brooks said there are “multiple” Senate Republicans who are now receptive to the effort, though he declined to name names. Sen.-elect Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), whom Trump has repeatedly praised on Twitter recently, has said he is considering the idea.... Other members who were in attendance include some of Trump’s staunchest allies on the Hill, such as Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.), Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Rep.-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).... During Monday’s meeting at the White House — where lawmakers noshed on a mid-afternoon snack of meatballs and pigs in a blanket — Trump talked with members for over an hour about how Jan. 6 will play out. They discussed logistics, such as what the objection language for each state would look like and how the floor proceedings will work.” This is beyond appalling. I hope anyone who voted for anyone supporting this notion will vote for someone else when they are up for re-election. I don’t think anyone who blatantly wants to cancel a fundamental process does not belong in a governing body of a democracy. https://www.politico.com/news/2020/12/21/trump-house-overturn-election-449787

After more details have come out about the 900 billion, it is a sin that the Republicans insisted on the reduction in the feds responsibilities and it is disgusting that they put a clause for tax benefits for three-martini lunches! Really, no wonder they lost the WH. Time to support the dems in Georgia! This corporate control over our lives has to stop!
