Should Family Sponsored Immigrant Visas Only Go to Spouses and Children?

Argument in favor

The immigration system should end “chain migration” that lets lawful immigrants sponsor extended family members, and instead prioritize those visas on nuclear families.

The strain that chain migration puts on the American taxpayer needs to be alleviated. 50% of immigrants collect taxpayer funded welfare benefits. This is a serious problem.

I agree with Blackhawk.Veteran ; "I agree, limit it to spouses and children. If not. Then Tom, Dick and Harry will be expanded into the law. We must draw a line and put a stop to this nonsense. I'm American and benefits are only given to my wife and child." Allowing foreigners to sponsor 4th or 5th (or 10th) cousins is asking for trouble. Where do you draw the line? Spouses and children only.

What is an extended family? 2nd, 3rd cousins? If this is a family seeking asylum, do we let in an entire village? There has to be limits. The family is what built this nation, let's keep one tradition alive.

Argument opposed

Visas that are currently available for extended family members of lawful permanent residents should remain in place, eliminating those visas and focusing on nuclear families is wrong.

This bill is racist on multiple levels. First it's overtly racist against immigrants, and we know which ones this administration likes to target. Second, it completely disregards the inter-generational structure of non-white families. We need to take this country back from the Klan.

This proposal completely fails to recognize the importance of extended family, particularly in minority cultures. This whole concept of punitive, restrictive immigration is a ridiculous one to begin with. Immigrants contribute to the richness of our nation both in terms of diversity and financially and it is time to step beyond taught misguided prejudices and acknowledge this. Providing a visa to someone's Abuela isn't all that risky so how about we stop pretending it is. Once again, the right speaks with a forked tongue. On one hand they bemoan the loss of "family values" and then on the other they seek to rip families apart and destroy the rich texture multigenerational and extended family brings to our society. Exactly where do they believe family values come from? Mine came from my grandparents and great aunts and even cousins who all participated in raising me and my siblings every bit as much as they did from my busy hard-working parents.

The Supreme Court has teviewed this to include extended family. I respect the opinion of the Supreme court (exception: I don't agree with Gorsuch's planned speaking engagement at any Trump property or any specific GOP event. Supreme Court Justices should be non-political!

Our immigration system is only "overwhelmed" because Congress fails to adequately fund it, like many other government run programs (that help pay for things most American families need). There should be no preference for nuclear families. Not being part of a nuclear family doesn't mean someone is somehow defective. Likewise, being part of a nuclear family doesn't necessarily make someone a better person (think domestic abuse). It's more oversimplification from a GOP that doesn't wish to read or think, that gets by with inspirational fakery and symbolism that means little but makes them look good.

Taking care of aging parents is normal, especially nowadays as people live longer. Why limit immigrants who are here legally from doing that? Also, children do better with grandparents and other relatives around- so people should be able to bring/sponsor any relatives they can support or who can support themselves. The govt needs to stay out of micromanaging immigration.

So the plan is to exclude elderly parents and grandparents as well as grandchildren. My question is how do you define family for yourself? Because in mine, I include parents, grandparents and grandchildren, my siblings and their families too. If I moved to another country I'm not sure that everyone would want to follow me, but I insist on having the option of including my parents and grandchildren if they want to come. Certainly, they all need to have Visas to visit. As this nation treads the path of xenophobia we need to have more thought about plans, better than a cookie cutter arrangement. Is the plan to be mean spirited and cruel? That's what I see!

This bill fails to consider the traditional multi-generational family structures within Latino and African culture. It sounds like Eurocentric non-sense to me.

You have to draw the line somewhere otherwise you have everybody coming over. Its like someone else who is in front of you allowing 23 family members to jump ahead of you in line at Disney. Pretty sure mo one would be happy about that if you were in line to come to the US.

To the people who say that the extended people coming on family visas are a. urden to te taxpayer: you have to sign a form that bans you for using any government welfare program or subsidies. Your SS would be flagged if you tried to apply. Also for the visa application to be successful you need to meet certain income thresholds to prevent people to become a burden to the state. Source: I been through this process. Stop spewing the same talking points from Fox News without making a google search first.

This is not an easy answer and truthfully the question is much to broad. If we are going to honestly attempt to have a strong, healthy, democracy we will have to face some very difficult truths. Are we looking to ultimately have a single payer healthcare care system? Then we will have to factor in that it will indeed raise the cost to have the parents and grandparents of immigrant families here. Are we tying extra family members to those who work and contribute to those who use more social programs. We must ask these questions and be prepared to work within the framework of the answers. Even if we are willing to forego a balanced budget there is a finite amount of money to be spent. Money that goes into program A. must take money out of program B. Both programs may be compassionate and caring, but there is a limit and economic consequences will be real. I would like to go with my impulse and just vote yea. But again this question must be looked at from a wholistic perspective and should be dealt with in a bi partisan way. We must find ways to combine heart and financial intellect in such a way as it helps and makes the most sense to the majority of our citizens and strengthens this country. We need positive smart immigration, we just have to figure out what the hell that means.
