Argument in favor

Republicans shouldn’t have opened up part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas exploration in their ill-conceived tax cuts package. This bill would wisely restore protections for the wilderness and wildlife of Alaska’s Coastal Plain by reinstating the ban on energy development there.

Just stop raping the planet already. Damn. The need for oil and natural gas won’t go away when the world, hopefully with us leading the way, moves on to a carbon neutral economy. Petroleum products will still be needed for clothing, building materials, pharmaceuticals, transportation related products, plastics and so on. But, the vast expansion of fossil fuel production will be greatly diminished. It is counterproductive to consider expanding oil production when economically, the exploration and drilling costs are not likely to be recovered due to the glut of existing raw oil resources that will become available. ... ... Besides all that, the permafrost which structurally supports existing pipelines, is melting. This places great economic risks of not even being able to transport newly developed oil and gas resources to any accessible storage or refinery at all. Big money dudes, think of the losses you will incur. ‘Oh, the money, the money!’ Just stop so the rest of us can find joy in saving the planet, while you can enjoy cutting your losses.

Argument opposed

The Interior Dept. first recommended the full energy development of this small section of ANWR 30 years before President Trump signed the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act into law. Congress shouldn’t try to stop energy development there, which would undermine economic growth and the national push for energy independence.

God put the oil in the ground. It is a natural substance. As a part of nature, man is encouraged to carefully extract it and put it to good use for the betterment of mankind. DRILL BABY DRILL!

We have reached a place where we can extract natural resources without harming Wild life. It is bad stewardship to depend on foreign oil while letting our own oil lie fallow. I love that we are energy independent, but we won’t be if we foolishly do not harvest our own resources.

    Should Oil and gas development from Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge should unequivocally be Blocked! Joe Balash, Top Interior Official of the last two years, who pushed to expand drilling in Alaska steps down to join a foreign oil company that is expanding operations on the Alaska's North Slope. This move isn't a coincidence and needs to be investigate for blatant corruption! And then you have the environment impacts drilling would cause and how all the rollbacks will leave the Alaskan people to pay for cleaning up what these companies destroy!

    There is a reason this land and waterway has been protected by previous administrations for over forty years: To prevent people like Trump and his corrupt minions from exploiting it for private enrichment. Vote yes to block the destruction of this pristine wilderness. I like salmon. There won't be any left if the exploitation of this area continues.

    We need to focus on renewable energy instead of just allowing big oil who is already heavily subsidized, to continue to destroy our last wild and clean lands, leaking pipelines contaminating water sources, refinery explosions. The gain is not worth thenrisk

    As stewards of planet Earth we have an obligation to protect it as much as possible along with its plants and animals. We have done enough to acquire crude energy and to support profits for the companies involved. At this point, we need now to step forward to protect this part of the world.

    I have lived in Alaska for over 45 years. My legislators, and our Pig, want to take a pristine environment and destroy it for THEIR personal gain. It is unconscionable. The Pebble Mine, for example, would, most likely, at some point, destroy a salmon fishery that is one of the most important on this earth. Remember there has never been a mine that DID NOT fail. Furthermore, we have had numerous oil spills on land and sea that have killed countless plants, animals, birds, fish, etc. The destruction these industries have caused, in many cases, have cost us taxpayers billions of dollars in cleanup. IT MUST STOP. When these industries totally destroy our food sources on land and sea, what will we feed on - oil and minerals? Not what I want in my diet. Do you?

    Once it's gone, it's gone... a bunch of already very rich people will be even richer and this country would have advanced not one single inch into a future of clean power.... instead we will have destroyed one of the wildest, most beautiful places on earth.... oil will have soaked into every inch of the sea, soil, permafrost, and made our air even filthier than it already is. The ONLY energy sources we should be spending money on are WIND AND SOLAR.... leave the filth in the ground! We citizens of this world are sick - SO sick of our habitat, our environment, our wildlife being destroyed to enrich the already powerful and obscenely wealthy individuals who push for this garbage. Jobs my ass! There are jobs by the tens of thousands just WAITING in the wind and solar sectors. Stop this ugly, ceaseless, highly destructive lust for oil! They had an enormous oil spill already in Alaska... a mess that has NEVER been cleaned up! And another spill will be here till the end of time!

    Since this administration will not protect the environment, Congress must. We need to move away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible and make larger, massive investments now in sustainable energy technologies (wind, solar, batteries). This is a 10-alarm fire. Human-made carbon-dioxide is causing the polar ice caps to melt; over the course of history, the ice caps have trapped massive quantities of carbon dioxide. As they melt, the polar caps release massive amounts of carbon dioxide which exacerbates global warming, which results in further melting of the polar ice caps. As water levels rise due this melting, it will cause destructive sea level rises primarily along coastlines of large land masses (continents like North America) because of the large gravitational pull of continents. Hurricane severity, flooding, (record-setting high temperatures along with loss of land that can be farmed), increasing frequency and magnitude of forest fires and other natural disasters, will continue to wreak havoc in the U.S. interior as well as the coasts. We should provide a safety net (money) for miners and their families while providing them with free education to be skilled in development, installation and maintenance of solar and wind energy farms. Or we can just deny science and man-made contributions to global warming.
