This bill would finally increase pay and workforce protections for Transportation Security Officers, who are among the lowest-paid federal employees, in addition to addressing the chronically low morale and high turnover at the Transportation Security Administration.

The TSA isn’t much more than a elaborate security theatre in my mind, but sure pay the people a living wage for their work. It doesn’t make sense to me that TSA is somehow separate from other federal employees. Treat them the same!

The idea that paying TSA workers a living wage and giving them benefits would compromise national security is asinine. People who are feel that they are being treated fairly are more likely to be reliable, cooperative, and provide better service. People who are financially stressed are more likely to be distracted. I would argue that paying them so little is more of a threat to national security.

Argument opposed

It may be well-intended, but this bill would undermine the TSA’s national security mission by preventing the agency from addressing instances of serious misconduct, such as knowingly allowing a weapon to pass through security, through one-step removal.

Our TSA security should involve profiling. The security they have in Isreal is great without impeding air travelers. Our government has bought into political correctness, which is undermining our whole constitution! This should not be. Return to what worked for our nation for the first 200 years!

    God afternoon all, My name is Gino Morales, as a TSA employee I feel it’s time to put this agency under title 5. This bill (HR 1140) would allow that to happen. Every agency under the DHS umbrella has these rights that give federal employees a better pay scale (GS) and also benefits that would assist more in each employees livelihood. As you may be aware we experienced a furlough that lasted 35 total days. Even though our employees were not getting paid they still maintained the TSA oath and protected the flying public. They train to sacrifice their lives everyday , the fact is we are here to detect for explosives, prohibited items and weapons of mass destruction. It’s a dangerous job for all our employees, yet we are the lowest paid employees in the federal sector, we also have the least amount of benefits available to us. In the 16 years since 9/11 a plane has not gone down, that’s a testament to all Officers who sacrifice their lives every single for the mission, but are not given the same benefits and pay as the rest of the federal government. It’s time for change. Many of our federal officers utilize public assistance just to attempt to get by, I find it as a disrespect not only to me, but also to the government that we have our Officers having to reach out to public assistance just to get by in their daily lives. It’s time for a change, title 5 (hr 1140) will support the men and women who sacrifice their lives for the mission not only of TSA, but our proud government. As a federal employee and a constituent of the great state of Pennsylvania I am asking you to support HR 1140.

    We have always wondered why the TSA people worked for the Airline instead of the government. It’s a very important job & dangerous at times. They need better training & better psh to care for the safety of the people who take planes.

    Yes, absolutely, this needs to be fixed, as well as the failing ACQDEMO federal pay scale. All federal employees should be paid using the GS scale, and paid properly for the job they are doing.

    Why would one level of Federal Employee assuming similar risks be treated differently than others? Despite trumps desire for us to embrace India, we do not have caste systems here... yet.

    Maybe but we should have real facts and not a little descriptive language. TSA employees are represented by the AFGE Union. TSO’s make between $15 and $24 an hour (according to my research) which isn’t a lot of money but generally referred to as a living wage considering the prerequisites are being 18 and have a high school diploma. They also receive the full package of heath insurance, dental, eye, life insurance, personal and sick leave, flexible schedule and tuition reimbursement so that they can use their work as a bridge to a different career if desired. One thing they don’t get that federal employees get is months to be fired if they are caught putting travelers in danger on purpose. If we want to roll them into the normal federal system by all means, but there’s a reason they weren’t in the first place so let’s think about it as a whole.

    They are the pure definition of unskilled labor. As Bloomberg put it “you can train any one to do it.” 90% of federal employment jobs need axed. I’ve yet to see any federal or state job that could not be privatized and it be done with more efficiency, at a lower cost, more accurately with greater results.

    The Rights for Transportation Security Officers Act of 2020 — would reform the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) personnel system to expand the benefits and workplace protections. They are indirectly federal employees and are the front line of defense of the port of entry and domestic flights. They should have the benefits and workplace safety as all people. They are exposed to all source of hazards (as well as health) and should have the same protection, as what unions give to their members. TSA should fall under May be the FAA or FBI

    I disagree with your Nay vote Montana Rep Gianforte ! Front lines for security is A BIG DEAL and sacrifice of self bc of unexpected hazards and danger! I worked as a nurse 35 years and did not feel fully compensated for my frontline duties! It is worse now!! Senators, please think this through! The mind set of: profiteering by low pay to private business employees, is the wrong way to vote! This is a BIG problem for supporting workers on the front lines, literally! Very relevant these days!

    I think what is needed are higher standards in order to get a job with the TSA. In the past I’ve seen sloppy searches, carelessness, and bad attitudes. They are the first step in keeping the public safe. They must be aware of how vitality important they are, and awarded for service above and beyond. They should also be punished for poor service, poor performance, and bad attitudes. It is essential that people working in these positions, that don’t pay the highest wages. Know They Are Appreciated. Studies have shown that most people are dissatisfied with their jobs and leave, not because of money, but because of lack of appreciation Managers should be trained, to recognize, not just top performers, but also the ones that show up on time every day and do their jobs. An acknowledgment is sometimes more appreciated then even a small pay raise. To get back to the original question, I think things should stay as they are.
