Should Nonprofits Be Allowed To Offer Housing Assistance With Federal Funding?
Argument in favor
Currently, nonprofits are excluded from offering rental assistance through the Department of Housing and Urban Development's program, Continuum of Care (CoC). This bill would include nonprofits and increase the number of agencies trying to quickly re-house people experiencing homelessness.

The government needs to eliminate welfare, and allow churches and private nonprofit organizations the right to help and support local people that need assistance, where have the times gone when churches and other organizations helped the poor, and not the government?
Argument opposed
Government agencies are better equipped than nonprofits, with resources and funding to handle rental assistance applications and housing — especially if they don't have to share funding with nonprofits. HUD probably didn't exclude nonprofits from the Continuum of Care program on accident.

Non-profits get tax breaks already and that's as far as it should go. They raise money in donations. If people want them to have more money, they should donate - not try to force the rest of us to pay them in our taxes.

In this case, Big Government through the use of Taxpayers money offers housing assistance for control over the less fortunate. Non-profits would be more evenhanded by in addition to housing but educational training. Non-profits would also not allow rampant drug selling or abuse as a condition to housing. They will offer a hand up and limited hand outs.

"Federal funds" are taxpayers' money. If I want to donate my money to a charitable organization, that is my business. Government has no business taking my money, or yours, and giving it away.

There isn't enough affordable housing for the less fortunate. There needs to be more options available to house families and those who are homeless.
Let nonprofits do the work that they are set out to do. The more people that are willing to help, the better.

This could take some of the load off of HUD personnel and possibly make more housing available.
I'm totally in support of this bill. The current state and local housing administration are ineffective against curtailing homelessness. The more resources made available the better society is as a whole. We each have a social responsibility to ensure that veterans, families, women and children have a place to stay. If that simply means extending the same resources to new pathways then so be it. Because the truth is that many houses on state and local programs are available but aren't being processed for occupancy. Their wait list are too long. NPO can help get people of the street into stability.
This sounds like a reasonable solution using non-governmental partners that will know the local needs and how best to meet them. Don't like that there are is no financial data available to help me decide whether to support. I see, however, that the House passed it, so it must not seem so bad to all the "cut government spending" Republicans there!🤑
Let non-profits raise their own funds. The are more efficient and productive when not tied to government.
The poor need assistance and should be able to receive it from as many sources as possible, assuming the NGO's are carefully vetted.
In healthcare, first responders have access to all tools available to save and change lives. Social service agencies, non-profits, are equal to first responders in a medical crisis situation and should be afforded the same opportunity to help individuals who are in need, especially in terms of housing resources. Housing first models has proven to be effective in terms of lowering the mental health and substance use impact on vulnerable populations. Increasingly non profits are having to prove outcomes- give resources that can change outcomes for agencies and populations served alike.
Nonprofits should not exist. Flatten the tax base. Tax banks, churches, NFL teams, and PACs equally.
Reduce red tape and regulations whenever possible. However - do not increase spending to cover "additional" costs. If non profits want to spend their money on this great, but do not ask for additional funds. We are 18 TRILLION in debt. We cannot afford new programs. We should be cutting programs. Stop spending!!! We should reduce taxes and reduce spending $2 for every tax dollar cut!
Think about who needs funding, and how that populace already utilizes their nonprofits to take advantage of communities. Does anyone think this money will actually go to those in need???
