All companies and or commercial entities that have and use my personal information should be held responsible for any damages due to misuse of this information, especially if they fail to secure it properly. For example encrypt data at rest.
Argument opposed
Customers whose data is breached can already sue the entity that let their information be compromised in civil court. This bill is redundant and unnecessary.

Companies already do an excellent job of informing customers of security breaches, such a law will only complicate things.
This is a no brainer. Bring this bill to the floor and pass it.
People need to know when their personal information may have been invaded.

Absolutely common sense. Failing to notify should have dire consequences.
IT'S OUR DATA. A data breach is like someone pickpocketing us. Companies who we entrust with our data have a responsibility to keep our data safe, and when they don't we deserve to know so we can revoke our trust in them.
This should be a no-brainier. We deserve this information to help protect ourselves. Rembrandt every dollar lost to fraud is money that someone could be building the economy.
And the penalties should be paid to those whose private information was released, NOT to some stupid government fund!

Trust is vital. There should be consequences when that trust is broken.
Of course they should face federal penalties! This should force companies to take cyber security seriously.
If the data they required is not adequately secured then real injury has been caused.
