Should the Trump Administration Be Prohibited From Taking Military Action in Venezuela Without Consulting Congress?

Argument in favor

While the Maduro regime continues to abuse the Venezuelan people through corruption and persecution, Congress should do whatever it can to prevent the Trump administration from potentially committing the U.S. military to a costly and ill-considered intervention in Venezuela that’d only make the situation worse.

Congress should be the only ones allowed to approve deployment of American forces.

Trump should be restricted as much as possible on anything involving conflicts with foreign countries. He has demonstrated incompetence in foreign policy continuously for the past 2 years in my opinion and we need checks and balances on executive power to kick in

I definitely think it’s time we curb the excessive use of military action by the executive branch. The whole loophole of “not officially declaring war” has gone on long enough.

Argument opposed

The president has the power under the War Powers Resolution to commit the U.S. military to combat for a limited period of time before getting congressional approval. Military intervention in Venezuela should remain an option in case the situation worsens and it becomes necessary to stabilize the region.

President can deploy the military anywhere he wants for 90 days. Read the Constitution.

Whatever the rules are for all former Presidents should prevail. Just because you all suffer from TDS doesn’t mean you can change all the rules.

Venezuela is such a potential bomb to go off we better be damn careful. Vlad Putin is already involved with Maduro and regardless how we might feel about their partnership we need to respect it or you may find US soldiers in direct conflict with the Russians. We should be patient and let time take care of this issue. It will, be patient. Once someone looses the backing of their people then the regime will change. Ask the Chinese.

This president ignores the experts and appears ignorant of international affairs. Our military deserves a review by Congress, before intervention, particularly given the Russian presence in Venezuela.

Every Administration should be prohibited from engaging in, or inciting warfare with another nation without authorization from Congress. It shouldn’t just be limited to “Declarations of War.”

Public and private statements by President Trump and National Security adviser John Bolton that they want regime change in Venezuela in order to facilitated better profits for U.S. oil companies is enough reason to limit their ability to invade that country with U.S. or proxy troops (Contras.) In addition any military actions will make the humanitarian situation worse for the people of Venezuela. Aid should only be channeled through international organizations like the Red Cross or the U.N. instead of politically motivated aid like we have seen from the U.S. and their allies.

The President has that power for 180 day without congressional approval. On the 181st day is when congress gets to close the checkbook and tell the President to pack it in. This is fall in line with declaring a national emergency, the president has that right.

Our chief moron is not capable of doing anything right here at home or anywhere around the world. He will kiss any dictator’s behind while pushing our allies and other democracies away from USA. So why would we want to trust his judgement or morality here or anywhere else. And he is not authorized to use our military power against anything unless he has an approval from congress. And this time around the congress is not just a rubber stamp.
