house Bill H. Joint Res. 123

Funding the Gov’t For Two Weeks & Making Temporary CHIP Funding Available

Argument in favor

Congress needs to pass this bill to prevent a government shutdown while lawmakers negotiate a longer term spending deal. Even a partial government shutdown should be avoided.

If this does not pass, I do not get to train with my National Guard unit this month. Selfish reasons and I know it’s kicking the can down the street, but as a teacher in a single income family, that paycheck for training (and the training itself) is vital.

I’m reluctantly supporting this bill because these are crucial funds for low-income children. But, really these kids should not be pawns used in a political budget debate.

Only because chip is attached. It's nonsense that our government won't extend chip regardless of shutdown.

Argument opposed

Congress must stop relying on short-term spending deals to buy itself more time to do what already should have been done, even if it means a government shutdown.

Congress needs to stop holding the citizens of this country hostage with their constant threats of a government shutdown. If this bill passes, it does not solve the problem - even for the needy recipients of healthcare through the CHIP program. Kick the can down the road for two weeks. Then, in two weeks, kick it again. I am tired of the irresponsible attitude of our elected officials. DO YOUR FREAKING JOBS AND FUND THE GOVERNMENT. STOP HOLDING US HOSTAGE because you are more interested in winning some mythical battle than you are serving your constituents. You are a disgrace to the term public servant.

If Republicans can't fund the government that they are in COMPLETE control of right now, Democrats shouldn't bail them out just to get a temporary reprieve for CHIP. At minimum, protect Dreamers, fully authorize CHIP, and stabilize ACA. If Republicans in Congress can bend over backwards and screw the middle class to give tax cuts for billionaires, doing what is right shouldn't be too hard.

I am getting really sick of a Congress that can do nothing but pass short-term measures. DO YOUR JOBS! Funding the government and reauthorizing CHIP are essential. Do it and stop passing something that works for a few weeks or months only to do the same thing when the deadline arrives again. I’d have been fired for doing it. Y’all should be too.

I think it's ridiculous that Trump is blaming the potential shut down on Democrats since they want to see funding for deportation relief for Dreamers and somehow that funding is equivalent to allowing violent criminals free reign of our country. This makes no sense. I cannot encourage the passing of legislation when it somehow supports the spreading of Trump's lies and misinformation. I know it is imperative for our government to not go into a shut down because it will effect so many, but a clear line has to be drawn.

Stop with the Band-aid fixes and come up with real solutions. We need to fund the government and not add to the debt, so why are we doing a tax cut?!?

CHIP needs to be preserved. It is unconscionable that this Tax "reform" sucks the revenue out with a 15% cut in corporate taxes, special deductions for @#$% private planes and other KNOB HILL NONSENSE at the expense of basic healthcare for low-income children.
