The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that there are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square mile of ocean.[1]  Plastic bags are modern day tumbleweeds that can be seen floating in the sea and across the land. Although the plastics industry is trying to convince consumers that recycling is the best solution to fixing the plastic bag plague on our environment, recycling plastic bags is very difficult and energy inefficient. Most plastic bags end up in our landfills and thousands of them end up on our beaches and waterways.  Now is our time to join together to pressure California representatives to take a leadership role to pass a plastic bag ban.

  • Californians use more 19 billion single use plastic bags a year, of which only 5% are recycled
  • Plastic bags generate 147,000 tons of trash a year in California
  • As taxpayers, we foot the bill for the trash bag clean up in California - 3.23 billion a year (That's $88 per person!)
  • Plastic bags make their way to the ocean, where they negatively affect 296 different species of marine life.
  • 55 Municipalities in California have already banned the bag, creating a cumbersome patchwork of regulations, passing a statewide bill would simplify logistics and operations
Sign the petition and urge leaders to pass a bill this year.
