Conflict and Climate Cause Rise in Displaced Peoples
Is the U.S. doing enough to help displaced persons?
The big picture
- A humanitarian crisis continues to unfold as the number of people forced to flee their homes reached a record high of 71 million in 2022, according to a report released earlier this month by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre.
- In 2021, the number of displaced people was 59.1 million, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council's Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC).
- Many of these are internally displaced people (IDPs) who were forced to flee their homes or towns but remain in their country of residence.
- The United Nations defines IDPs as:
"[P]ersons or groups of persons who have been forced or obliged to flee or to leave their homes or places of habitual residence, in particular as a result of or in order to avoid the effects of armed conflict, situations of generalized violence, violations of human rights or natural or human-made disasters, and who have not crossed an internationally recognized border."
- Climate change and violent conflict are the driving forces behind much of this displacement, representing a one-fifth increase over last year.
What are people saying?
"Conflict and disasters combined last year to aggravate people's pre-existing vulnerabilities and inequalities, triggering displacement on a scale never seen before. The war in Ukraine also fuelled a global food security crisis that hit the internally displaced hardest. This perfect storm has undermined years of progress made in reducing global hunger and malnutrition."
"Today's displacement crises are growing in scale, complexity, and scope, and factors like food insecurity, climate change, and escalating and protracted conflicts are adding new layers to this phenomenon."
Where are the global centers of displaced people?
- Nearly three-quarters of the global population of internally displaced people live in 10 countries. They often cannot return home for years, if ever, due to lingering or unresolved conflicts. These countries are Afghanistan, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen.
- Ukraine recorded the highest number of displaced people, as 5.9 million fled their homes due to the Russian invasion. The war triggered 17 million displacements in total.
- Pakistan was second due to catastrophic flooding after an event described as a "monsoon on steroids" displaced 8 million people. The devastating weather destroyed thousands of hospitals, businesses, and critical infrastructure like highways.
- Several countries recorded millions of displaced people in 2022, including the Philippines, the Democratic Republic of Congo, China, Ethiopia, Nigeria, India, Somalia, and Bangladesh.
- While the report does not include 2023 numbers, the outbreaks of fighting in Sudan have already triggered double the number of internal displacements in a three-week period than all of last year.
What are the risks?
- Displaced people suffer higher mortality rates and are at significantly higher risk for physical violence, sexual assault, and abduction by human trafficking networks.
- Women and children make up a disproportionate number of IDPs.
- Droughts in Somalia have displaced 1.4 million residents, four out of five of which are women and children. UN and humanitarian workers in Somalia are sounding the alarm over the gender-based violence that women and girls face in the country's displaced person camps amid ongoing droughts.

The problem of displaced people whether due to natural disasters or man-made war and violence is bigger than 1 country can handle and needs to be addressed by all 195 countries through the UN, specifically UNHRC which specializes in this by providing camps, and then finding coutries to accept displaced people as refugees. How the US can help is supporting UNHRC efforts.
I think we've see the difficulties in going it alone with the US Southern Border and working bilateral agreements with all the countries involved in the Americas to address the problem,
No, and if the damn Republicans have their way we never will do anything to try and curve the harmful effects of climate change which is what is fueling these displacements. I don't believe that the US should be the only country to step-up to the plate, this is a global crisis and it demands a global response.
I'm pessimistic about the whole situation.
The whole world needs to take action, not just a few.
I am deeply concerned that we'll see the worldwide collapse of country governments, which is already happening in quite a few countries. Climate change and immigrant issues plus other troubling issues will cause the collapse.
All the comments are well thought out. I wish worldwide politicians are as good as the commentators. Unfortunately, we know commenting and taking actual action usually do not happen. We hope the Congress folks listen to our pleas...
On immigrants...only if Congress follows some of the excellent comments by Cause Commentors...then maybe we'll survive the upcoming upheaval?
Just move up the hill a little, Its not rocket science
World migration is at a modern high (we're not sure how many people migrated before history was recorded, nor how fast), and it's time for countries to wake up and plan for it, because it's not going to stop.
Between climate crises, lack of food, unstable governments, crime, and economic inequalities, there are many causes for these migrations.
It's not the United States' duty to take in all these migrants, but we certainly can and should do as much as we can. We have a massive workforce shortage coupled with a low birth rate and an aging workforce, and many of these migrants will be needed to take their place in the workforce. Additionally, since so many are aging out of contributing to Social Security and Medicare, migrants will help fund those systems until the large elderly diminishes to more manageable numbers.
People can be scared and say what they want about migrants, it won't change the basic facts:
People are migrating around the world.
They need to go somewhere.
The US needs more workers.
The US has an obligation to hear all claims of asylum that are presented legally.
The US needs more people to contribute to the tax coffers (especially since the ultra-wealthy refuse to).
Immigration is what made our country great to begin with, so it's time to recognize that and adapt.
There are parts of our country that are being run like a banana republic. We have to fight like our lives and the lives out of children depend on voting in progressive reformers to the Dem party. The blue dog and corp Dems are killing us
US military veterans are being forced out of housing to accommodate illegal immigrants. Migrants are placed in school gymnasiums. We have no idea who these people crossing our borders are, yet they are given priority over our veterans and America's school children. Does anyone see a problem here? Our government is supposed to protect US citizens, not put them in danger!
When will we just turn these countries into a parking lot and replace them with a similar power generator
By abiding by the Geneva Convention we may make life better for many with little consequence to ourselves. I hate how conservatives have weaponized this issue and spread misinformation about it without taking any positive action about it.
So much displacement is the direct result of the effect of climate change. Earthquakes, tsunamis, drought, wildfires.. and its the poorest of people that are most vulnerable. We ALL need to pay attention and support legislation that addresses climate change.
How much more does the global mafia want?? It's either CLIMATE CHANGE OF RACISM OR EVEN BETTER, BOTH!!! The tyranny of the Communist elites are now on the move, digging into our country to bring it to the big collapse!
And who in our government are more than willing to surrender to the global establishment? THE DEMOCRATS!!!! AMEN
If we don't care for those less fortunate, we are dirt bags. It's that simple.
No.
The USA, despite the fact that nearly everyone here has family that came from somewhere else, is xenophobic. Most people don't know many if any immigrants personally. Fewer have immigrant friends. That is especially true for people who want to close our borders.
It annoys me that the children of immigrants want to shut all the doors and windows to keep any more immigrants getting in!
the U.S. is the worlds #1 polluter, and is therefor responsible for the magority of climate change.
You can't have your cake, and eat it too.
if land becomes unsustainable for human life due to the climate disaster- where will you deport them too?
America has become a cruel place.
From this land of privilege, we do not do enough to help those in our own country or those from other countries who may be suffering.
Tax money should not be used for this purpose. However, the government could certainly stop getting in the way of charities that are trying to help.
Groups of people displaced by climate change are only going to grow in number in the coming years. It is going to definitely create a challenge for industrialized nations to deal with this, as there will very likely be people, in the nations that could help, also displaced by the effects of climate change.
I am always stunned at the reaction of many people that climate change is not real.
In fact, one of the realities that is hardly ever offered as an example of the hardships climage change can create is the Syrian Civil War. The farmers, whose failing crops caused by drought, marched on Damascas because their government failed to provide enough assistance. Look at that trail of tears for a preview of what is to come.
Instead of helping them and incorporating them into our workforce - where they are sorely needed- Republicans, especially Texas Republicans are villifying and deporting them.
Too much-kick out homeless vets for immigrants
Suggesting climate change has displaced even one person is simply false. Is there no end to idiotic policy?
Climate change is not a reason for people fleeing their home. Foreign countries need to do a better job of helping themselves and their citizens
