GOP Lawmakers Attempting To Restrict College Student Voting Rights
Do you think student ID cards should be a valid form of voter identification?
What’s the story?
- Republican lawmakers are attempting to create voting barriers for young voters and college students, many of which are left-leaning.
- Young voter turnout has skyrocketed in recent years, especially among college students, who historically have paid little attention to elections. With the 2024 presidential election nearing, groups focusing on youth civic engagement are ramping up their campaigns.
- As the fight for young voters develops, the GOP is attempting to make it more difficult for college students to vote.
Young voters by the numbers
- According to data from Tufts University’s Tisch College of Civic Life (CIRCLE), approximately 28-31% of eligible young voters cast their ballots in 2018, a significant increase from the 2014 midterms. CIRCLE found 67% of these voters voted for Democrats, and 32% voted for Republicans. Turnout was especially high in battleground states — Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
- Historically, youth voter turnout has been around 20% for midterm elections.
What are states doing?
Idaho
- Republicans in Idaho — where voter registration among 18 to 19-year-olds jumped 66% between 2018 and 2022 — successfully banned student ID cards as a form of voter identification. Idaho joined Texas, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee as states that will refuse student IDs at the polls.
- Two lawsuits were filed in state and federal courts shortly after Gov. Brad Little (R) signed the proposal into law. Plaintiff Betsy McBride, the president of the League of Women Voters of Idaho, said:
“The facts aren’t particularly persuasive if you’re just trying to get through all of these voter suppression bills.”
- Proponents of the law say it is necessary to prevent voter fraud, despite being incredibly rare.
New Hampshire
- GOP lawmakers in New Hampshire, which has one of the highest numbers of college students from out of state, proposed a bill to restrict voting access for those students. The bill requires students to show their in-state tuition when registering to vote.
- The bill died in committee after failing to receive a single vote.
- New Hampshire Republicans also attempted to roll back preregistration for teenagers residing in the state, which was unsuccessful.
Texas
- Rep. Carrie Issac (R-TX) introduced a bill to eliminate polling places on college campuses, citing safety concerns and fear of political violence. Issac brought forth similar legislation for polling places in elementary and middle schools.
- Voting rights advocates and experts are skeptical about her reasoning and doubt the bill will pass.

These Republican Cartel members are so devoid of common sense. Trying to block college students from ready access to cast their vote will energize and motivate them to vote. They are the voters of the future and will remember the morons who attempted to stifle their rights.
Oh, there will be a lot of double-spreak from the Cartel denying that they are attempting to keep our upcoming youth from voting, and about how they are protecting the vote from fraudulent voters such as foreign nationals with student ID's - ignoring the fact that every voter is cross-checked against on file voter registration records.
I am fairly glad that they are encouraging each other in their self serving echo chambers and hearing from the less well educated people that they cater to, in their sparsely populated highly and/or highly gerrymandered districts.
I encourage them to keep it up and for Dems to call them out.
2024 is looking better and better. Morons!
YES!!!!! This is just another Republican effort to restrict voting rights.
That is what absentee ballots are for. That is what I had used in my last four years in the military. I wasn't stationed in my home state so I voted absentee. As I see it a college student choose and out of state school, so that isn't your home state, vote absentee. I can not figure why you think you are entitled to be special.
Kinda depends on how official the college IDs are. I mean, all of these people still need to be registered voters in their home states, right? And their signatures would have to match the voter rolls.
I do feel as though passing laws that limit who can vote is distinctly un-American.
And I think it's gonna bite them on the ass.
Once again removing access to the polls for a special population, students, as 11 states already accept all student IDs, 13 states accept student IDs with some limitations like they must have a picture and signature, some require an address on the ID as well.
1) 11 states accept all student IDs (AK, AL, AR, CO, Mi, NH, PA, RI, SD, VA, WA)
2) 13 states accepts some if picture, signature, and/or address (DE, CT, FL, GA, IN, KS, KY, LA, MS, MO, UT, WI, WY)
3) 15 states No Voter ID (CA, IL, ME, MD, MA, MN, NE, NV, NJ, NM, NY, NC, IR, VT, WDC)
4) 11 states do not accept student ID (AZ, HI, IA, ID, MO, ND, OH, OK, SC, TN, TX)
Concerns over foreign students voting because they have student ID are the same for Drivers Licenses as US citizenship is not required to get a drivers license either.
"A valid, unexpired foreign passport or consular identification document from their country of citizenship are acceptable forms of identification. This law authorizes the issuance of driver's licenses to those who do not have lawful status or a valid Social Security number."
Regardless of the type of ID required by a state, voters must 1st be registered and their signatures are on file for verification.
IDs are used by some states to verify the person is the registered voter they claim to be. There are 15 states that still allow voters to be identified by the signature on file like banks do to access accounts and lock boxes

It shows that you are over voting age unless you are one of those college whiz kids that are 12 but can do science formulas of Enstein.
CAUSES TELLS ME, THEN ASKS: "Republican lawmakers are attempting to create voting barriers for young voters and college students, many of which are left-leaning. States are banning student ID cards from the polls, trying to restrict out-of-state voting, and more. Do you think student ID cards should be a valid form of voter identification?" ME: Students are required to renew their ID cards each semester, quarter, or whatever system the school uses in order to retain campus privileges. If the student's ID card is current (and has a picture as certainly allmost all of them do), then absolutely 100% yes. On the other hand, I suspect there would be some questions if I tried to use my UCLA card from the 1970s today ... Just another GOP attempt to supprress voters -- people of color, the disabled, the elderly, and now the young. It also does not go unnoticed (given out-of-state students) that GOP states are withdrawing from "...the Electronic Registration Information Center, or ERIC ... a multi-state partnership that experts across the political spectrum say is the only reliable, secure way for states to share voter registration data with each other."

Driver's licenses, military id's, state id's, and US passports are valid forms of identification. Students would have, at a minimum, a state driver's license or state ID. College ID cards are easily fraudulent.
The GOP is always looking for ways to suppress voters they don't want having a voice.
Stop trying to silence people!
Equal rights for all potential voters. Can't we work on making our country stronger and more cohesive instead of working on such folly?
Of couse it should! republicans know the youth in this country are sick of their crap so attempt to make it harder for them to vote!
A verified student ID should be permitted for voter registration. Stealing the votes of qualified voters should be against the law not made part of it. The stupidity of these legislators is unbelievable. I think any such regulation will be struck down in the high courts. Those who try to regulate and enforce such things should find themselves UNEMPLOYED.
Just more disenfranchisement. Since when were college students NOT citizens with all the rights and responsibilities afforded with that status.
I had to help my college kids jump through hoops to vote and now the Texas GOP wants to remove polling places from college campuses. We see you.
Just another attempt by the GOP to supress voting.
Here is hoping the students remember them and VOTE THEM OUT.
If the requirements are the same as for a State ID then they shouod satisfy the purpose of a State ID or Drivers License with optional Federal standing. Before any such laws were passed the fraud rate was far UNDER 1%, never enough to make a difference in any election. Passing such laws does NOTHING to secure election and EVERYTHING to violate voting rights! They will be passed and enforced, then extend ID standards to protect those rights. Federal law can require this, and it is the job and duty of the US Congress to address rights violations in state and federal law! (Congress, get it done!)
In my opinion if someone is serious about voting, then take the time to register, and take the time to arrange a mail in ballot. If your in one state for six months or more then see if maybe you can register there. There are ways to find out what the rules are for wherever you live. Nobody is preventing you from voting. Nobody is trying to make it too inconvenient for you to vote. Nobody wants unfair voting. Everybody wants legitimate voting. So the rules are different for each state. So what! They are grown adults who are going to college. Surely they can investigate to find out what they're suppose to do "for themselves" to vote. We all have had to do things in the past as an adult to do things. It's not always easy. But it is part of growing up and maturing. So you may be gone most of the year someplace. Then find out what your suppose to do to be able to vote from wherever you are or how you can make it easier for yourself. Maybe your only home for the summer. You still have time to register. Rules for voting have been around since the beginning. But it's on you! And it's not impossible!
Everyone wants a fair election no matter the party. We're all Americans and it should be a concern. But people have to act more responsible for themselves. On both sides. So sick of the name calling and blame game.
This is just another attempt to disenfranchise others suspected of having differing views. This country was built on the notion that the electorate would chose their representatives rather than the representatives choosing the electorate. Stop violating the constitution you swore to uphold. This behavior should disqualify those from serving in office.
This is clearly just an attempt to suppress the vote of young people who tend not to vote for Republicans. Voter suppression and gerrymandering are all the GOP has going for them.
Absolutely, because they have a photo and school affiliation and date so that anyone can see they are enrolled. These cards are not easy to fake because schools do not want odd non-students roaming the halls or dinning halls. School IDs have been used for decades with no problems. The GOP simply wants it to be hard for young people to vote.
Voter ID should show current address as many students actual place of residence is outside the precinct they may be trying to vote. We need to keep votes legal and legitimate. No voting in two locations.
Your Voter Registration Card issued when you first register with your Supervisor of Elections Office should be sufficient as it use to be. Voter registration should be made easier not more difficult.
The GOP specializes in voter suppression, it's the only way they can win.
We should be doing everything to make voting easier to all Americans
But the minority gerry-mandered GOP won't allow people to vote anymore, because they know they deserve to lose.
