Are you concerned about "Doomsday"?

I find this very bleak, but I'm not sure the Doomsday Clock has ever been more than 5 minutes before midnight, and we've made it this far?

I'm concerned with the war in Ukraine, but I don't think Putin is stupid enough to start nuclear war...yet.

I'm more concerned about climate change and the rampant destruction it is causing while political leaders continue drag their feet and not see the urgency. I'm not sure it's that close to midnight, but I do think we need swifter action.

I am concerned about all of the factors that lead to this change in the doomsday clock; the potential use of nuclear waepons by Russia, the increasing severity of climate change with little collective action to deal with it, the societal belief that the 'truth' is what someone tells them and that alternate 'truths' are real, the increasing corporate greed while letters to share holders show tripled profits as they blame inflation. For the price increases, the influence of big dark money on our and other country's governance, and the general me-first attitude of people instead of an interest in the common good.

While I find all of these things threatening and alarming, I feel that we can collectively overcome them all.

To start, we need to get all big-moeny interests out of every aspect of influencing our governance or spreading unfounded 'alternate' realities for political expediency. It is impossible to find common solutions without any agreed to starting point -which is possible with all of the willful disinformation and alternate realities being intentionally spread.

The Doomsday clock is a metaphor representing the risks of self destruction that was created in 1947 by the scientists of the Manhattan project who built the atomic bomb but protested its use against humans.

In 2007 it was updated to include risks from climate change resulting from man made causes.

In January 2023 it was set to 90 seconds to midnight due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the increased risk of nuclear escalation.

"The Doomsday Clock is a metaphor that represents how close humanity is to self-destruction, due to nuclear weapons and climate change."

"The clock hands are set by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a group formed by Manhattan Project scientists at the University of Chicago who helped build the atomic bomb but protested using it against people."

"In 2007, the Bulletin began including catastrophic disruptions from climate change in its hand-setting deliberations."

"January 24, 2023 –The Doomsday Clock was set at 90 seconds to midnight, due largely but not exclusively to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the increased risk of nuclear escalation. The new Clock time was also influenced by continuing threats posed by the climate crisis and the breakdown of global norms and institutions needed to mitigate risks associated with advancing technologies and biological threats such as COVID-19."

Yes, I am slightly more concerned due to Putin's threats. But we've been living with the nuclear threat my whole life.
If he carries his threats out he should know that there is a great risk that, let's say, there will be hell to pay in this world and the next.

However, I have some doubts about the Risk Assessment Process.

If there's one thing TV and movies have taught me, it's that in any post-apocalyptic scenario, there will still be plenty of cows and people who know how to make intricate leather clothing.

Not really it is not actually a clock or anything that predicts the end of mankind.

it was designed in the 50's to let us see nothing more than the Cold War problems and the threat of nuclear destruction

A few words from Comrade Putin and the clock moves because we are now worried we have pushed him back militarily and he might then in desperation use nuclear weapons.

The threat that Iran has put forward moving to obtaining nuclear weapons and their declaration that they will wipe Israel off the map and that the great satan The USA would then be next should have moved the clock but it didn't and won't even though it is a grater threat.

At the end of the President Trumps administration and the Abraham Accords were signed and six other Arab states wanted to join in with Israel did we add a few seconds to that fictitious clock? No we didn't.

Ah, Doomsday for human life. I am more concerned by the lack of positive acknowledgment and movement among politicians and high-level corporations in this country. When one focuses on the past and gives money to oil and coal rather than choices that would help clean the environment, we are doomed by our choices.

We don't just have to stop Putin; we must prevent our country from participating in the doom. I applaud Governor Newsom and President Biden for proposing changes to help the environment, but it is not enough. Electric cars and solar energy are not affordable for the masses. Our technological geniuses need to focus on how to get us out of this mess and stop producing more and more garbage and items with planned obsolescence.

We must shift our society toward a new way of living with nature rather than using up resources. This needs to stop being a political issue and become a survival issue.

Yes!  We have so much hate and greed in this world and it's quite pathetic. Many higher ups claim they are doing "the right thing" when, in fact, there are likely hidden agendas that are just lining their own pockets or protecting their own family due to some back door treasonous deal.
If governments or monarchies were really concerned about human kind, they'd find a way to eliminate the barriers.

There has been a lot of provacative dialogue and saber rattling as a result of Russia's invastion of Ukraine,  mostly from Russia.

There has also been a lot of repression in many countries, mostly focused on women, as in Afghanistan and also Iran.

As concerning as these are, I still believe that humanities' "angels of our better nature will ultimately win out.

It makes no sense and seems to be just an attempt to grab some attention from the public.  They are actually humerous as they stand there with their solumn faces, prbably trying not to smile or laugh.

In is disturbing to lose 10 seconds in a single year, especially when you read the primary cause:  the lunatic leading Russia.  While I am not sure of how accurate this gauge is, it should give us cause for pause because we are running out of time to make corrections.  What I fear right now is the possibility that Belarus will enter the Russia/Ukraine war.  What will be the response from NATO.  This action could significantly escalate the conflict.  I trust our appropriate agencies and developing plans to cover this action.

I'm more concerned about doomsday brought on by pollution. Nukes are less likely but still real threat of extinction.

I am concerned.   This, however, is all the fault of all politicans and Governments the world wide.  Had none of these utter buffoons not tried to our arm one another, we wouldn't be in this mess.  Nuclear anything is wrong.

CAUSES TELLS ME, THEN ASKS: "Doomsday Clock at Record 90 Seconds to Midnight.  Are you concerned about "Doomsday"?"  ME: As a follower of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists for years, indeed I am. And, in fact, I'm surprised it wasn't set even closer to midnight than it was.

I vividly remember the thirteen day 1962 Cuban Missle Crisis, sitting at my desk at work and wondering whether this was "it" -- and today feels very much the same, but, rather, drawn out into months and years.  Nuclear proliferation abounds within countries seemingly willing to use it; the Climate Crisis is rushing towards (and even passing) irreversible tipping points into greater [un]natural disasters; species extinctions are running between 1,000 and 10,000 times the natural rate; global population has tripled since I was born and exacerbates just about everything: all of the foregoing, along with resource and food scarcity (and famine, inflation migration), tribal and religious wars, overturning the rule of law, and on and on.

And, the political will to reverse course just doesn't seem to be there.  "There is no clear pathway for forging a just peace that discourages future aggression under the shadow of nuclear weapons" (2023 Doomsday Clock Statement, p.3) -- and it seems there is "no clear pathway" towards resolving any of the other current plagues of mankind I sense converging on us today.  90 seconds isn't a lot time ...

As long as idiots keep working against Mother Earth, like US Republicans as an institution, expect her to be pissed off and take revenge. The current batch of unprecedented weather is one way she's showing it. Of course, there are also madmen like Putin who would nuke us to extinction for his own personal power and/or "fun."  Cool world we're living in, huh?!?

We need to be concerned about the worsening of the climate.  Earth is our only home and we are ruining it.  Pass laws now to stop climate chang.  We must end our dependence on fossil fuels.  We must stop the production of single use plastic.  We must stop using forever chemicals which are poisoning our planet.
