Should there be more official "days of service"?
This Monday, Jan. 15, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day — a federal holiday honoring the life and legacy of the late civil rights leader.
Honor MLK Day
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a “day of service.” Befitting the purpose-driven spirit of this day, we're highlighting some ways to take action. While some events are specific to this day, we've also included resources and organizations that you can access and support any day of the year.
Educational Resources
- Stanford University’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute has extensive resources to access and learn more about Dr. King and the civil rights movement.

- The National Civil Rights Museum website includes videos, e-learning activities, and museum information.

Virtual and Local Events
- Nationwide - Americorps is the official federal agency for community service and volunteerism. They provide a database of volunteer opportunities year-round, and you can specifically search for MLK Day events as well. Check out all of their resources here.
- The King Center is hosting a variety of virtual events, trainings, and seminars.
- Washington, D.C. - The King Family is set to lead the annual Peace Walk on Monday.
- Memphis, TN - The National Civil Rights Museum is offering free admission on Monday. Other in-person and virtual events are listed here.
- Philadelphia - Home to the largest MLK Day event in the country, Philadelphia is hosting a number of speeches, volunteer opportunities, and events.
