New Trials Find a Four-Day Workweek to Be Successful - Are You Interested?
Do you want a four-day workweek?
What’s the story?
- New trials of a four-day workweek have been called “a resounding success.” Almost all companies who attempted the shorter week are now planning to implement it moving forward.
- In Ireland, 12 companies ran the 6-month trial, and all their employees universally praised the new schedule. They reported reduced stress, burnout, and fatigue, along with better sleeping habits, more time for hobbies, and even excitement to get back to work.
- In the U.S., the majority of the involved companies said they’re likely never going back to a five-day workweek. 97% of employees in the U.S. said they wanted to continue with their four days of work. 100% of Irish employees voted to continue a four-day week.
- The companies that took part did not reduce pay to their employees. The trial found that company earnings increase during a shorter workweek, with average revenue rising 38%, according to the trial’s survey.
What are experts saying?
- Juliet Schor, a professor of sociology at Boston College and a lead researcher of the trial, said that employees did not report an increase in the intensity of their work during those four days. She continued:
“This suggests that the work reorganization strategy succeeded and performance was not achieved via [speeding up], which is neither sustainable nor desirable.”
- John Leland, a chief strategy officer at Kickstarter, stated that the trial was a win-win for employees and employers. He said:
“The 4-day week has been transformative for our business and our people. Staff are more focused, more engaged and more dedicated, helping us hit our goals better than before.”
- Dr. Orla Kelly, a professor at the University College Dublin, said the research provided critical insights into the future of work in Ireland.
“We found significant improvements across a wide range of well-being metrics, including positive affect, work-family and work-life balance, and several domains of life satisfaction.”
What’s to come for the four-day workweek?
- Another six-month trial in the United Kingdom was completed in November, with the results due in February. This trial included 70 companies and 3,300 workers, which is the world’s most extensive workweek trial to date.
- Calls to shorten the workweek have increased recently, especially after the initial COVID shutdown in 2020. As millions were forced to stay home and work remotely, many realized they could do their jobs from the comfort of their homes. With most of the world back in person, many are pushing for more remote hours.
- The project was carried out by Four-Day Week, a non-profit organization trying to spark a four-day workweek worldwide. Learn more about their mission here.

In global businesses, different countries especially non-Christian countries, have different weekend days, so meetings (and deadlines) are only scheduled Tuesday-Thursday.
And some businesses/industries also still have summer Friday's where people can have 1/2 or all of Friday off if they have already put in their 40+ hours.

This is not really that new. Other countries are doing it successfully. Australia · Belgium · Canada · Denmark · Finland · Germany · Iceland · Ireland have already implemented shortened workweeks in many cases with no reduction in pay. In most cases productivity has increased by up to 40%, work-life balance has improved, health care costs have reduced, and overall job satisfaction has improved.
Will it work in the United States? The question is probably more accurately phrased Will it be allowed to work in the United States. We have a work ethic and expectation that is destructive in most instances. Elon Musk's expectations of his employees is not atypical of most upper-level corporate officers. I well remember a conversation with a collegue who, after leaving his job at IBM, stated he did so because his next promotion would have required he "marry the company", something he was not williing to do. In the current model in the United States many employers are reluctant to pay above minimum wage and provide adequate vacation or even sick leave (witness the railroads re: lack of sick time, and most minimum wage jobs). Employees are considered liabilities, not assets. Why would they allow shorter workweeks when they are reluctant to allow work-from-home conditions that they cannot constantly monitor and control? Control and profit are the motivators, employees and benefits are liabilities and often not easily within the employers control. Four day work weeks allow for less control, greater respect but less control.
Unfortunately, I work in an industry with hours more or less dictated by our clients. So they'd all have to start working 4-day weeks before we could do it.
Besides, I work from home 3 days a week. Given that I can already take breaks whenever I want as long as I still get my work done on time, I'm not sure that a 3-day weekend is all that important to me.
If a business is an office job like a secretary pool or an accounting firm or an insurance company that might work fine but a skeleton staff should come in on Friday taking Monday off instead to answer phones and questions and help customers.
Imagine a business like a restaurant or better yet a grocery store that was only open 4 days per week. Or how about a hotel?
The 5-day, 40-hour workweek has had its time, and it seems that many people are only productive for a few hours a day. Let's reconsider how much time people really need to accomplish their tasks and adjust the work week so that work gets done without wasting employees time.
This will require a huge change in the management and executive mindset, but it's about time. People perform better when they feel their time and energy is being respected.
I would've loved it. Especially since I was already working longer hours daily to begin with.
Certain types of jobs are such that long hours do not take an obvious toll. However, there is a cost to longer days. It must not be made compulsory!
Personally, I am wondering if the pandemic will have lasting effects on people's willingness to work long hours.
The Wisdom Of Hippocrates: Why Life Is Short, And Art Is Long
by Peter Burns
https://link.medium.com/CHmuXMnrrvb“Life is short, and art is long,” thus began Hippocrates. He continued: “the crisis fleeting; experience perilous, and decision difficult.” Art is often used as a synonym for skill. It takes a long time to acquire the experience necessary to be a master.
I think it should be the business that decides the work week that they feel is best for their business, not congress.
We should start having a 4 day work week here in California.
yes, our lives are not, and should never be just about labor.
furthermore, the quality of work you get from a well rested, happier worker is far better then an overworked, tired, and stressed worker.
raise your children, go to a concert, meet with feinds, live a life...thats what we need more time for.
Everyone always praises finding a work-life balance, but that's very hard to do when a majority of our time is spent at work. A four-day work week (without a pay cut) would greatly improve the quality of everyone's life. Not only that, but it would improve worker productivity too. I always feel so drained and exhausted on my fifth day. Having extra time to recover and less time to wear out would make me so much happier and more motivated going into work.
Yes, because it makes sense and it really works. It doesn't mean employees have to take a pay cut or that a business has to be closed the 5th day. I know businesses that are already doing it and the employees love the 3-day weekend and the employers report better attitude, productivity and hence better profitability.
along with a wage raise that doesn't take years to go into effect and is an actual living wage.
Depends on the business. In general, I would say yes.
I worked a four-day week for many years. I took every Wednesday off. That way I worked 2 and 1 off 2 and 2 off. I got my business done on the mid-week and had my weekends free. When a holiday came I got another day and could couple that with one vacation day and increase my time.
BUT now that I am RETIRED the wife does not recognize this method and my days off are few.
I am retired and this has been tried with 10 hour days. I never was in the trial. Longer days for a 3 day weekend works but Since 5 days have to be covered some got a day off in the week instead. I wish I had tried it
Only if the payrate stays the same.
That would be helpful and stop these rogue companies from forcing you to work overtime or else!
What are the details? Is it four longer days or four eight hour days. Part of the problems with this culture is more money for less work which is a cause of inflation right beside the overspending by government. Keep government out of business decisions!

Interesting how American national security is at risk, due to the compromised Joe Biden, and yet the Left still defends him. People that are so brainwashed, that they deny a real danger to their own lives and families lives, for a misguided hatred of an previous President. There was a time that Americans were not so full of pride, that they could admit when they had been mislead and change course.

The news outlet that broke the Hunter Biden Laptop Story, that the Left called "Russian Disinformation." I think maybe the Left should maybe start reading the NYP, particularly Miranda Devine, if they truly care about FACTS.
When I worked I put in 10-12 hour days so 4 days would have been welcomed.
How did I know there would be nothing on Causes about the Twitter release last night? Thought you were rid of me, didn't you? So what excuses will you have for this?
