New Emails Show Ginni Thomas Pressuring Multiple Lawmakers to Overturn the 2020 Election

What’s the story?
- New emails show that Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, the conservative activist and wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, attempted to sway 2020 election results in Wisconsin and Arizona, according to the Washington Post.
- Earlier this year, the Post reported that Ginni Thomas contacted 29 Arizona lawmakers in November and December of 2020, urging them to choose their own presidential electors and ignore Joe Biden’s presidential win, contradicting Arizona state law that says the responsibility for selecting electors rests with the voters.
- New emails, obtained under state public-records laws, show messages to two Republican Wisconsin lawmakers, Sen. Kathy Bernier and Rep. Gary Tauchen. They received the emails at 10:47 a.m. on Nov. 9, 2022, the same time Arizona lawmakers received a “verbatim copy.” The emails titled "Please do your Constitutional duty!" read:
“Please stand strong in the face of media and political pressure…Please reflect on the awesome authority granted to you by our Constitution. And then please take action to ensure that a clean slate of Electors is chosen for our state.”
- The emails disclosed by The Washington Post showed that Ginni Thomas encouraged the elected officials to choose a “clean slate of Electors” and to “audit” the 2020 presidential vote.
Jan. 6 committee testimony
- Ginni Thomas has refused to testify before the Jan. 6 committee, despite previously agreeing to testify to "clear up misconceptions." This is in alignment with her attorney Mark Paoletta’s letter to the committee that says there is no “sufficient basis” for testimony from her. In the letter obtained by the New York Times, Paoletta described Ginni Thomas’ text messages to ex-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows urging him to overturn the election as “entirely unremarkable,” and said that they do not show that she had any role in the attack on the Capitol.
- Liz Cheney (R-WY), Jan. 6 committee co-chair, said that Ginni Thomas could still be subpoenaed, but that the committee hopes she will testify voluntarily.
- Jill Wine-Banks, attorney and former Watergate prosecutor, advised that even with a subpoena, Ginni Thomas’ may not be able to testify due to spousal privileges and her husband's inability to testify against her.
- Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) told CBS on Sunday that Ginni Thomas has "relevant testimony" to share with the House committee, and urged her to come forward.
Public response to Ginni and Clarence Thomas
- Many feel that Ginni Thomas’ political activism is unusual for the spouse of a Supreme Court Justice, which raises questions about Justice Thomas' conflict of interest.
- A petition launched by advocacy group MoveOn gained over 1.2 million signatures earlier this summer, calling for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The petition was created after Ginni Thomas' texts to Meadows were revealed. This prompted calls for the justice to recuse himself from cases related to the Jan. 6 attack because of his wife’s involvement.
- MoveOn executive director Rahna Epting told Newsweek that Ginni Thomas’ text messages showed a direct conflict of interest for the justice, as he was the only vote against the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attacks obtaining access to contested White House records.
- Wisconsin lawmaker Bernier said in an interview that it would have been appropriate for the state legislature to consider invalidating the election results in 2020 if evidence of voter fraud emerged. Bernier added that Ginni Thomas “...has a First Amendment right to speak her mind.” She said:
“I was married for 20 years. I took on some identity of my husband, but I had my own mind. Just because you’re married to someone doesn’t mean that you’re a clone.”
- Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who delivered a speech on the steps of the Supreme Court in July with activist groups MoveOn and Demand, disagrees. She said:
“There’s no way Clarence Thomas can be seen as a neutral jurist and should not decide cases while his wife actively worked to overturn the election. Our failure to hold him accountable will further delegitimize the Court…”

Kind of 'funny' that the rule-of-law does not seem to apply to the people in charge of ruling on the laws that everyone else is expected to abide by.
Kind of funny that the rule-of-law, when applied to the trump always seems to always be delayed until any just ruling is no longer relevant to investigations at hand, for example the release of his tax records and financial entanglements with Russian banks. Yet, the Conservative Supreme Court Justices did not waste any time for deliberations in overturning Roe for their Federalist Society Christian Nationalist Masters,
Our country needs a major tune-up to get big money out of any and all aspects of our governenace and take back our future from the corruption that comes from dark money interests.
Vote Blue, make America a safe place for non-brain washed, non-corrupted people once again.
Minimally Clarence Thomas needs to recuse himself from cases where his wife's text messages are part of the evidence.
She can pressure them all she wants, but she holds no power over them to make them do anything. So what difference does it make? It wasn't Justice Thonas pressuring them.
Even if Clarence did not agree with his wife's actions, her list of contacts came directly from HIM!!! She contacted his former clerks, who now are serving in high court offices, as well as sitting Congressional members to overturn a lawful election!
At the very least, this man SHOULD recuse himself from ANY case that remotely touches the decisions regarding tRump!!! If he won't, the other two branches need to remember their power to CHECK & BALANCE!!!

An investigation regarding Sedition should already be ongoing for this couple
Ginna Thomas has no power over the lawmakers so I don't see this as an issue and as long as the proof (e-mails) is limited to her and them and not her husband, I do not see the necessity for him to to recuse himself. If we are concerned about the influence a spouse may or may not have over a Supreme Court Justice, then marriage should not be allowed not only for this position but all others, e.g., President, Congress members, Judges, etc. which is just stupid.
As wife of SCOTUS-Justice, she should...Shut The Hell Up!...in any public-political comments.

Am I concerned that Ginni Thomas was instrumental in the attempt to overthrow a free and fair election.....YES and I am even more concerned that she is the wife of a Supreme Court Justice, who had to know of her involvement and who has not spoken out against it AND still sits "in judgement" of others in what is supposed to be the pinnacle of justice/the highest court in the land.

This woman is a traitor to our democracy. I believe she should be in prison & her husband should resign. No, I am not concerned over the action of Ginni Thomas as she is free to express her doubts about the election integrity. I just don't think it was prudent of her to do so in respect for her husband's position and integrity.

She needs to be investigated along with her sleaze ball, sexually harassing husgand. Given that he heard cases and possibly will hear cases related to the insurrection, it's not much of a streatch to understand that there is an issue of conflict of interest in his hearing of cases, but given that he has no ethics or morals he won't step aside on those cases and god knows how much influence wifey has on his rulings (I would guess a lot).
