What’s the story?
- The Census Bureau is accepting public comments on the Trump administration’s plan to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census.
- To submit your comment before the August 7 deadline, click here.
What does it matter?
- Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced in March that the 2020 Census will include a question about citizenship. The Justice Department maintains that the question is a necessary tool in the enforcement of the Voting Rights Act.
- Nearly a dozen states have filed suit against the question’s inclusion. And various progressive and human rights organizations have also pushed back, including the League of Women Voters who said in a statement the group:
“vehemently opposes this measure, claiming that it will result in an undercount of those living in the United States and will jeopardize fair redistricting and the determination of the allocation of resources.”
