UN General Assembly, U.S. House Approve Resolutions Condemning Putin's Invasion of Ukraine
How do you feel about the UN and U.S. House resolutions condemning Putin’s invasion?
What’s the story?
- The United Nations General Assembly and the U.S. House of Representatives each passed resolutions Wednesday which condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
- The UN General Assembly voted on a resolution that reaffirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders; deplored Russia’s aggression in the strongest terms; demanded an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of the Russian military from Ukraine; and called on Russia to abide by the UN Charter, among other related provisions.
- The General Assembly adopted the resolution on a 141-5 vote with 35 abstentions. Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria, and Eritrea were the five countries that opposed the resolution. Among the notable abstentions were China, Cuba, India, Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan.
- The U.S. House considered a non-binding resolution which demanded an immediate ceasefire and the full withdrawal of Russian military forces from Ukraine’s territory; expressed unequivocal support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity; backed the continued use of sanctions to isolate the Putin regime; and urged the U.S. and its allies to continue to deliver defensive security assistance to Ukraine.
- The resolution was adopted on a bipartisan vote of 426-3, with Reps. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Thomas Massie (R-KY), and Matt Rosendale (R-MT) were the only lawmakers opposed to the non-binding bill.
