Russia Vetoes UN Security Council Resolution Condemning Putin's Invasion of Ukraine
How do you feel about Russia’s veto?
What’s the story?
- The United Nations Security Council met Friday evening to consider a resolution that would condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, call for a halt to the Russian military action, and withdraw its troops from Ukrainian territory which was blocked by Russia.
- Russia, which is currently the presiding chair of the UNSC, used its ability to veto the resolution, which therefore failed. Russia is one of the five permanent members of the UNSC with veto power. A veto of a UNSC resolution can only be overruled by invoking the “Uniting for Peace” resolution which requires a two-thirds vote of the UN General Assembly to override the veto and adopt the resolution.
- Eleven members of the UNSC voted in favor of the resolution, including three permanent UNSC members ― the U.S., France, and the United Kingdom ― plus eight rotating members: Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Norway.
- Three countries abstained from the vote, including China (which is also a permanent member of the UNSC), India, and the United Arab Emirates.
