U.S. Moves More Troops & Aircraft to NATO's Eastern Front as Russia Invades Ukraine
Do you support the deployment to NATO countries in Eastern Europe?
UPDATE 2/23/22
- Russia has launched its invasion of Ukraine, which you can find coverage of here.
The original article appears below.
What’s the story?
- The Pentagon on Tuesday announced several movements of troops and aircraft within Europe to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) eastern front to deter aggression against members of the alliance amid Russia’s military buildup on Ukraine’s borders. Defense officials say that a Russian invasion of Ukraine looks increasingly imminent, as about 80% of the more than 150,000 Russian troops deployed near the Ukraine border have reportedly “uncoiled” into attack positions to where they can go at a moment’s notice as of Wednesday.
- Among the American units already deployed to Europe that will be heading east will be an infantry battalion consisting of 800 troops from the 173rd Airborne Brigade stationed in Vincenza, Italy, who will deploy to the Baltic region to support NATO allies Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
- Additionally, up to eight F-35 Lightning II fighters will move from Germany to several operating locations on NATO’s eastern front; 20 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters will move from Germany to the Baltic region; and 12 AH-64 Apaches will move from Greece to Poland.
- American personnel deployed to the region are there as a “tripwire” meant to deter Russia from acting against NATO countries, given that doing so would result in the invocation of NATO’s Article V mutual defense clause. They will also conduct training exercises with allies and, if Russia further invades Ukraine, help respond to an expected flow of refugees fleeing the war zone. The U.S. and NATO have made clear that there are no plans to use those forces in Ukraine, which isn’t a NATO member.
- These movements are in addition to the two separate deployments totaling about 6,000 American troops and additional military assets to NATO countries in Eastern Europe that have been announced in recent weeks amid Russia’s invasion threat.
- America’s NATO allies are also continuing to deploy more military assets to Eastern Europe, such as the British Army’s Royal Welsh Battlegroup who are deploying to the Baltic region to join NATO forces already in the area.
- Additionally, the readiness level of the entire multinational NATO Response Force (NRF) has been elevated over the last week so that the roughly 40,000 troops attached to it (including 8,500 Americans) could deploy if needed within seven days, rather than 30 days. That brings the full NRF closer to the level of preparation of its Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, which remains permanently able to deploy 5,000 ground troops plus another 15,000 personnel from air, maritime, and special forces within two to three days.

No WAR, talking it out is the way.
I support our involvement 100%! I hope that we and our allies can put a speedy end to this mess, move forward with a free Ukraine and, a (free from Putin) Russia.
Let’s go NATO!!!
We stand as one or fall one by one.
If anyone thinks that Putin is done once in Ukraine, you are a bigger fool than those who voted for the senile moron currently residing in the home built for real leaders, and not corrupt politicians. If Trump was still President, the Russian Army would still be polishing their shoes. And not one move on Ukraine. This is a Democrat quagmire that they created. Just like our rise in crime. They sit and fill the pockets of the Oligarchs. Like Soros. I am just going to watch the Democrats go down the toilet in the next election. Unless they cheat once again.
jimK is on some new type of trip.
Let's go all out and move combat/logistical components of Ft Carson, Ft Riley, and Ft Bragg back to Germany. Leave them there for next five years and see what develops farther east. Adding 45,000 soldiers to US strength in Europe just might move Mr. Putin out of his chair.
Well it has started. Missiles have landed in Kyiv. Russian artillery batteries are firing into Ukraine. … … … All Putin wants is ‘peace’. Where no one is left around to challenge his authority. It would certainly be ‘peaceful’ for Putin if he manages to kill or imprison anyone willing to argue with his ambitions or distorted world view. … … … Thanks to Joe Manchin and the Republican Cult we are closer to becoming ‘that’ country as well. Autocracies function by crushing free will and anyone that that has dares to factually challenge the autocratic leadership. … … … Thanks Joe Manchin, the trump thing and the spineless Republican Cult for leading our country to this precipice, Hopefully enough people will realize the risks and vote the Republican Cult into oblivion. I do not want a ‘Putin’ autocratic government run by a lot of putin-politicians. … … … Watch out Canada, a Putin-like government here is likely to declare Alberta an independent entity and send American ‘peacekeepers’ in to secure the peace - so our new oligarchs can strip your country’s mineral wealth. After all, in autocracies might makes right.
Better safe than sorry!
All Nato members need to send troops!
we should help stop the ivadion of ukraine before it be war all over the world.we much stop russian.
We promised we would come and help them. We promised in the treaty.
We signed a treaty NATO, "North Atlantic Treaty Organization" at the end of WWII. We said we would fight for the Eastern block countries if they were ever threatened by Russia. So here we are. It is time to do it!
If we refuse to stand up now, we will be on our knees later.
LET THEM BE.
The US has to support NATO in anyway that is needed!!
Poland 1939. Enough said.
The whole reason for forming NATO was to counteract exactly this kind of aggression from Russia. Only a traitor or a useful idiot for Putin would support Russia's invasion. Sadly the GOP is now the American arm of the GRU.
My friend is under possible attack so I will run to their aid and help protect them to the best of my ability. Having their back proves my loyalty to them and at the same time I receive their respect. There is strength in numbers regardless of ethnic background or religion once a mutual respect is established and loyalty proven.
But only target Putin, Guy from china and iran, Make the world a safer place.
