U.S. & Allies Sending More Troops to Eastern Europe, Arms to Ukraine Amid Russian Invasion Threat
Do you support the deployments to NATO countries and arms shipments to Ukraine?
What’s the story?
- The U.S. and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies are sending more troops and equipment to the alliance’s eastern flank and additional armaments to Ukraine to bolster its defensive abilities in the face of Russia’s looming invasion threat.
U.S. & NATO Movements
- Senior U.S. defense officials told Reuters on Friday that 3,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division are being deployed to Poland to bolster the country’s defensive capacity, as it shares a border with Belarus which is currently hosting a significant number of Russian military personnel.
- This deployment in addition to the 3,000 American troops who were recently deployed to Eastern Europe, including 1,700 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne to Poland, 300 paratroopers from the 18th Airborne Corps to Germany, and 1,000 troops from an Army Stryker squadron who moved from Germany to Romania. It’s also distinct from the 8,500 American troops who’ve been placed on heightened readiness as part of the NATO Response Force, which hasn’t yet been activated.
- Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby announced Saturday that the contingent of about 160 U.S. Army troops from the Florida National Guard who have been deployed in Ukraine since November as part of a rotational mission to train the Ukrainian military are being temporarily withdrawn and repositioned elsewhere in Eastern Europe amid the Russian invasion threat. Other NATO militaries are withdrawing their training deployments from Ukraine as well, with British and Canadian troops being repositioned. Elsewhere, Germany is deploying some troops and artillery to Lithuania.
- The U.S. is also deploying Air Force assets, with eight F-16 Falcons moving from Germany to Romania and eight F-15 Eagles deployed from Great Britain to Poland as part of NATO’s air policing mission and to serve as an additional deterrent. The U.S. previously sent six F-15 fighters to Estonia, joining Belgian, Danish, Norwegian, and Polish fighters in the Baltic states. Additionally, the U.S. is in the midst long-planned bomber task force exercise, with several B-52 Stratofortresses deploying to Great Britain.
- In the Mediterranean Sea, the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group has been exercising with ships from NATO allies, including the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and the Italian aircraft carrier Cavour. The Truman and the Norwegian frigate Fridtjof Nansen made a scheduled port call at Split, Croatia, on Friday and are scheduled to remain there until Tuesday. The U.S. Navy also deployed four more Arleigh Burke-class destroyers from the east coast to the Mediterranean.
Arms to Ukraine
- The U.S. Embassy Kyiv, which is in the process of reducing its staff footprint to only essential personnel amid the Russian invasion threat, announced on Friday that the 15th shipment of defensive assistance from the U.S. arrived in Ukraine. The latest shipment included about 90 tons of ammunition and shoulder-fired Javelin anti-tank missiles, and further deliveries are expected in the days ahead.
- In recent weeks the U.S. and Great Britain have been joined by the three Baltic states ― Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania ― plus the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Poland, and Turkey in sending arms to Ukraine. Deliveries have included Javelins, NLAW anti-tank missiles, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, ammunition, artillery shells, and drones.
- Germany has blocked efforts by NATO member states to export lethal arms to Ukraine that were originally made in Germany (including those made decades ago in the former communist satellite East Germany). Germany has, however, sent 5,000 helmets and other non-lethal aid to Ukraine.

Not only do I support arms shipments to Ukraine I would go further to include real-time intelligence, a continuous convoy of arms including medium and long-range anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, and close air support by unmanned aircraft. Not only is it in our interest to prevent Putin's power grab, there is a little matter of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum in which the US, Russia and the UK guarantee Ukraine security in return for that government's disarmament of nuclear weapons. Google it. Russia had broken that agreement--in spades. Will we keep our promise?
We, the United States of America, SIGNED THAT TREATY THAT SAID WE WOULD! I would like to see, once in my lifetime when the United States of America, my country, and the country of my ancestors, has kept and stood by the promises of a treaty that they negotiated and signed!
Frankly, I would like to see US troops in Ukraine supporting the people there. Maybe Russia would think twice about attacking the US.
WE SHOULD send weapons but no troops. Open the US energy supply - NOW. OIL is giving Putin the $$ to pull this crap!
Yes, I support equipment for Ukraine and troops to bordering and eastern countries. What I DO NOT SUPPORT is the misleading headline of this that said, "U.S. and allies send more troops to Ukraine, and..." because it is sensationalism and outright lying at its worst! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF A HEADLINE IN EMAIL LIKE THAT! I expected better of you, Causes.com!!!
Putin is not the chess player he thinks he is. What he has done is united NATO not divided it. Rallied Ukraine not scattered it. Brought more troops to neighboring countries not sent them away. To invade Ukraine would only bring more sanctions that Russia can’t bear. Every move has brought unwanted consequences. He is not a good chess player but he is stupid & prideful enough to invade anyway because he’s a fool. He will regret not backing down. Pride goeth before a fall. The consequences of his actions will be severe!
Remember Hitler told Chamberlain at Munich: Sudetenland is my last territorial demand.
What else should we do?
A little history—for our congressional members who are ignorant of it: in 1853, France, U.K., and Ottoman Empire fought Russia in the Crimea. Russia lost. That war ended with a Paris treaty.( Ted Cruz probably thinks Paris gained something from this. And if the U.S. had been involved, that we gave up something.)
I feel that the US has done more than Russia in stirring up the discord presently between our two countries. That we are sending any arms to Ukraine is creates more tension and shows how beholden we are to the defense industry. There should be legislation requiring all Congressional to take courses on the history of Russia (& Ukraine). There is little understanding; so any lies and there are many promulgated by the state, defense, executive departments are picked up by the media and digested by an ignorant public; Plus most courses of studies about Russia are sponsored in Universities by the CIA and defense departments. Courses that teach empathy are black listed. All of this is cause for SERIOUS concern!
I support the movement of troops to NATO allies in eastern Europe and the provision of arms to Ukraine. This is a situation in which an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We should not forget the mistake the world made when Nazi Germany moved to invade its European neighbors. Other European countries and the US looked away and tried to appease Germany. We also looked away from Japan's invasion of neighboring countries. These events, which were largely unchallenged by the world, heralded the beginning of the devastating global conflict that was WWII. In the aftermath of WWII, the US and other nations understood that when nations feel empowered to invade their neighbors, there can be no peace anywhere. Right now Russia is threatening peace in Europe. If they are not punished and shown that other nations are arrayed against them, Ukraine may not be the end of their ambitions. Likewise, China is also seeking to assert control over territory that does not belong to them. We were drawn in against our will to fight and die in WWII. The world is even smaller and more interconnected now. We are fooling ourselves if we think we can stand apart from what is happening. Nations that fail to respect the sovereignty of other nations are a danger to us all. Supplying Ukraine with arms and sending troops to stand with our NATO allies is a prudent step and punishing Russia if they move against Ukraine is both just and necessary.
Putin is nothing but a little demigod in control of a Third World nation. Screw him and his totalitarian Trumpy bullshit ways. The world should align and financially run Russia right into the dirt which won’t take very much because it’s pretty near the ground right now.
Heck yes, I would also like to know what Trump discussed with Putin when him met with him during his so called presidency. It should be against our laws and I presume it is. I sure would not trust him in those cases and most definitely alone with any woman.
Thank God we no longer have Putin's Ass Kisser Trump in Office.
Another "Damned if you do and damned if you don't" moment. Looks like Russia is playing "the Big Bully" once again and makes me wonder just what is really going on in that country and its government. In this country it is the "corporate military complex" and their greed allowing this to transpire backed by the almighty "power play". Regardless, it is nothing more that all-consuming power and control over each other. I personally am coming to the point of "kill them all and let the Creator decide". This BS of game playing without any type of compromise is just plain BS. They are just acting like little children fighting over the same toy on Christmas morning. Spank them soundly and send them to their individual rooms until they can act like proper human beings.
Mr. Putin cannot be trusted--he says whatever he wants, which bears no resemblance to the reality in front of us. Only one coin try has deployed more than 130,000 troops to Ukraine's borders--and waged a campaign of disinformation and computer hacking for years. We need to have the backs of our NATO allies near Ukraine, and the Ukrainians need arms to display their understandable defiance to Russia trying to annex their country!
Vladimir Putin's stance in Ukraine, including his annexation of Crimea, is very similar to Adolf Hitler's stance at and prior to the beginning of WWII. Allowing a bully, in this case Russia, to annex all or portions of another sovereign nation's territory, is an approval of such conduct.
I believe we should threaten Russia with Military retaliatory strikes, not merely sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine. Send missiles, not sanctions! We already allowed them to Annex/STEAL part of Ukraine without retribution. With our poor, unworthy administration, noone fears or has any respect for America anymore. Besides HORRIBLE handling of our botched Afghanistan retreat leaving 1000's of our brave allies there to be murdered, we are led by the worst leaders in history.
A lot of this could have been avoided if this administration would have left the Trump sanctions on Russia and the blocking of the Nor Stream pipeline. Getting Germany and Europe to buy our oil instead of being beholding to Russia would have at the very least stalled any invasion and keep them with western leaning values. But good old Joe wanted to show how powerful he was to dismantle everything Trump, instead of doing what’s right for our country. Closing down our pipeline and shutting down drilling to instead buy about 30% of oil from Russia and wanting OPEC to drill more is about as half assed and inept as I would expect from this so called leader. Not to mention if things escalate and we once again don’t get Americans out. Idiots!
All countries need to do whatever they can to support an independent Ukraine, short of boots on the ground. Russia’s actions are just like Germany before WWII, taking over countries and seeing if the rest of the world would do anything to stop them. It is so sad that in the 21st century there are despots that still can’t just leave other countries alone.
