What’s the story?
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently revealed that they killed eight wolf pups in Idaho--that had been adopted by students.
- The pups were a part of The Timberline Wolf Pack, a group of wolves adopted by a local Boise high school in 2003. After Biologists discovered the pack’s empty den in Boise National Park, they obtained a wolf ‘mortality list’ from Idaho’s Department of Fish and Game and saw that the eight pups were included.
- In response to the outrage from conservationists, federal agents have defended their actions, saying that the wolf pups were a danger to livestock. They also argued that “removing juvenile wolves would encourage adult wolves to relocate, thereby reducing the total number of wolves requiring removal.”
How are grey wolves being targeted?
- Historically, grey wolves have been harmed by wolf-culling laws and almost went extinct in the U.S. They were protected by rhe Endangered Species Act of 1974 but delisted from the Endangered Species List in 2018 by the Trump Administration.
- Idaho’s Republican lawmakers passed a law that aims to kill 90% of the state’s wolves. Under the law, people are allowed to bait wolves into snares, aerially gun them down, and mow them down with vehicles.
What conservationists are saying
- Idaho conservation groups wrote a letter to the Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, asking to “immediately suspend the killing of wolf pups on all public lands by the USDA federal agents”. The letter adds:
“There is nothing biologically sound or socially acceptable about killing wolf pups on federal lands, especially when wolves are under significant eradication pressure.”
- The Biden administration is considering relisting grey wolves on the Endangered Species List.

There is no good reason for it. After years of trying to reintroduce wolves, we are now doing the exact opposite. What was the point of all those years of hard work and money spent. DONT MAKE IT ALL WASTED FOR NOTHING.
What is wrong with our government? Killing such small beautiful creatures in need of our protection!
Wolves should never have been removed from the endangered list. It has allowed killing of the species, and left them vulnerable to eradication. I urge them to be placed back in the endangered list for their protection.
I strongly oppose. These great animals are critical to their top predator status. They should never be killed to save someone some money. They should never be killed by humans, period.
Let me guess, the ATF had something to do with this?
Wolves would still be on the endangered species list if it weren't for the Trump Administration. We worked long and hard to bring back the almost-extinct populations of these important animals; we should still be protecting them. They threaten no on, and ranchers who lose animals to wolf predation are reimbursed for their loss. Hunters need to stop the killing and our government needs to stop giving them its blessing.
From reading the comments it appears some voters are regretting their choice. Don't worry. For every wolf pup killed, you make space for ten illegal people. Feel better?
Wolves overall are extremely endangered in all parts of our country. Their fast-dwindling numbers are being propelled by anti-science, anti-conservation, extremist political individuals and lawmakers in Republican controlled states. Extinction is forever. Did I mention the barbaric and especially cruel methods sanctioned in those states? No, there shouldn't be any culls of wolves because none are science-based but are knee jerk reactions to rabid anti-wolf, blood-thirsty thinking.
Unfortunately, the world is getting smaller.
Protect animals they are better then people
A lot of GOP congress members need to be "culled'!
NO! What’s a matter with people wanting to kill everything
I just love this thread! You liberals are so intent on killing human babies, yet are adamant that wolf cubs be left alone to thrive. To be clear, my position is to let them both survive, but such a contrast.
Wolves are endangered. There was never adequate scientific evidence to support removing them from the Endangered Species List and they should now be put back on that list. They are critical to ecological management of the parks and public lands, and must be preserved!
Wolves belong!
🤣🤣🤣, Steve! Loved it. 👏🏻❤️😊
Azrael, loved it! 👏🏻👍🏻😊❤️
Why is this a question? We need wolves to keep other animals in check If you want to get rid of predators-get rid of Trump and his band of grifters
Wolves are an integral part of the ecosystem! Killing wolves will impact the stability of the natural area.
I like animals. I like dogs. I have had cats and dogs (and fish) for pets. But wolves are not pets. Neither are their pups. Wolves can have a lot of pups in one litter. Lot's, sometimes 8 to 12. That means wolves can spread like rabbits, or a bad case of herpes.
