The White House announced Tuesday that FBI Director James Comey has been fired by President Donald Trump based on the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
In the last year, the FBI carried out a high profile investigation of then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server to handle classified information and conduct official business. It’s in the midst of an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and potential collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.
In his letter recommending Comey’s dismissal, Deputy AG Rosenstein said Comey had mishandled the conclusion of the Clinton investigation by usurping the authority of the Attorney General and federal prosecutors by closing the case and announcing that "no charges are appropriate." Rosenstein also noted that Comey violated Justice Dept. policy to hold a press conference discussing derogatory information about the subject of a declined criminal investigation.

The White House has said that the search for a new FBI Director will begin immediately. An FBI Director is appointed by the president and subject to confirmation by the Senate, and if confirmed serves a single, 10-year term.
