New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Says He Will Resign in Two Weeks Amid Sexual Misconduct Scandal, Impeachment Inquiry
How do you feel about Andrew Cuomo’s resignation?
What’s the story?
- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) announced Tuesday that he will resign from office effective in 14 days amid a sexual misconduct scandal and an ongoing impeachment inquiry. He will be replaced by Lieutenant Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), who will become New York’s first female governor.
- Cuomo, who had been planning to pursue a fourth term in office next year, said at a press conference that the controversies were “about politics” but had become a “distraction” for the state’s government and announced:
“My instinct is to fight through this controversy, because I truly believe it is politically motivated… Given the circumstances, the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to governing. And therefore that’s what I’ll do.”
- The state’s attorney general last week released a report which detailed complaints 11 women brought against Cuomo. Investigators found that the governor engaged in unwanted touching and grabbing of intimate body parts, in addition to making repeated offensive, sexually suggestive, and gender-based comments in a “toxic” and “hostile” work environment.
- Investigations of Cuomo’s sexual misconduct are ongoing at the local level, and the disgraced governor may face criminal charges along with civil lawsuits. His top aide Melissa DeRosa, who was named in the AG’s report as having retaliated against some of the complainants, resigned following the report’s release after concluding that the governor wouldn’t be able to remain in office.
- Cuomo was facing an ongoing impeachment inquiry led by Democrats in the state assembly that included the sexual misconduct allegation in addition to Cuomo’s s suppression of data related to nursing home deaths due to COVID-19; his use of state resources in writing his book about his pandemic leadership; and special access his relatives received to COVID-19 testing. It’s unclear at this time whether lawmakers will continue the impeachment probe.

Thankful he has left the office - but very disappointed, but not surprised, that I recently saw that he was hosting a show on CNN. That seems very wrong and I am sure that the majority of the people who were testifying about his misconduct wonder why CNN or any media outlet would "reward" him with a public show. Definitely shows his privileged status as most people (especially Republicans) would be crucified by the media vs being hired!
Obviously Cuomo has to go, but I'd really like to know who orchestrated this obviously political attack.
I’d feel better if we held Republicans to the same standard. Trump and his cronies have done far worse and yet nothing happens to them.
The way this happened was wrong - the State AG releases their findings but then makes no legal charges - likely hoping it would force resignation. Then the Albany police announce their findings and go beyond a simple statement which taints any potential jury if charges had been filed - again, likely to push for resignation. Meanwhile nothing on the deaths from nursing homes on his COVID choices. So my bet is once he steps down this all fades away with nothing happening to him. Had he been the opposite party of those investigating perhaps it would have been more aggressive on getting him charged legally. Then you have his CNN brother who had no problem last year talking about him positively but now that it is negative he is silent claiming it would be a conflict of interest - then that should go both ways and he should not have been on air supporting him last year.
Cuomo still needs to be held accountable to the law for both - forcing seniors back into convalescent hospitals to die during the COVID pandemic and in his crime against this woman and other women.
It’s about time but with it getting so much coverage now & they eating their own & spitting him out, what are they hiding? Covid passports & more lockdowns?! Before he could do no wrong.
It is the right thing for him to do, politically. The allegations are enough to damage his ability to govern. I still refuse to say that he is guilty of anything beyond being dumb enough to engage in antics which are no longer socially acceptable. He certainly appears to be guilty of the accusations made but until he has been given his opportunity for his day in court and an opportunity to confront his accusers he, by our laws, is not guilty of anything. If there was a lot if corroborating evidence presented of his ‘crimes’ in the form of statements made, others directed to cover-up his misdeeds, memos written or neutral eyewitnesses who observed his alleged abuses my opinion could easily change. Right now, we have a lot of he-said she-said comments and allegations of this sort need to be sorted out in court to arrive at a common legally acceptable definition of what is the ‘truth’. … … … Political judgements do not require the same level of truth that courts should require. These allegations alone limit Cuomo’s ability to govern and his resignation is the politically responsible action to take at this time.
He did the right thing by resigning. How I wish the GOP will cultivate some MORALS and denounce Trump, Geatz, Jim Jordan, 2 Supreme court Justices and a slew of others who have been abusive!!!!
Punishment does not match the crime.
Sad becuz NY is my home town! He’s fallen from a great height! Was hoping he’d run for President. My mood worsened when I heard and then read his apology - pathetic apology trying to blame generational differences! Come on Cuomo- you don’t still use Oriental for Asian Americans or colored for African Americans! You knew better. Just say you ‘f’ed’ and be genuine! That I can respect!
At least one of the major parties is trying to hold themselves to an ethical standard of conduct.
It’s amazing to me how much of a double standard we have concerning sexual abuse between prominent Democrats and Republicans. The media has protected this piece of crap for so long. We have others on the liberal side that basically get a pass for inappropriate behavior. We have a Democratic Representative that has had a known relationship with a known Chinese spy and sits on a foreign relations committee.NOTHING! This should be the start of cleaning house.
Anyone who abuses their power should be held accountable. The former President has been accused of sexual misconduct by at least the same number of women; when will he be held accountable?
Who really cares... he destroyed NY and must be sacrificed for some reason. Hey Cuomo - start giving evidence of all the corruption so you have some redemption.
Cuomo was just following Joes lead.
He should go to jail
Honestly it should not be this hard to protect women especially when it’s this many women coming forward!! 🤷🏾♂️
I think that his resignation was the right thing to do. I am angry, however, that only Democrats seem to have to follow this route. There was no accountability for the former WH resident. There is no accountability for Madison Cawthorn. It's time for Republicans to adhere to the same code of morals that they want everyone else to follow but feel immune themselves from any moral conduct.
Well, I am sure the pressure has made him make that decision. How many other officials have been accused of sexual harassment? I can remember one in particular..... Trump. Too bad they are not all answering for their conduct towards women. I am not making excuses for him, but I think we tend to overlook certain people. Just a thought.......
It is the right decision. However, it is telling to show how Democrats hold their elected officials accountable. Meanwhile today’s Republican Party doesn’t. When trump was accused of dozens of unwanted sexual assaults and even rape, crickets. Now the GOP is the Death party with the likes of Abbot and DeSantis.
