14 More Bodies Recovered From Condo Collapse, Death Toll Rises to 78 With Dozens Missing
How do you feel about shifting from rescue to recovery?
What's the story?
- Fourteen more bodies were found at the site of the Surfside, Florida, condominium building collapse, bringing the death toll to at least 78 people as of Friday morning. Sixty-two people remain unaccounted for.
- Search efforts at a Surfside, Florida, condo that collapsed June 24 shifted from rescue to recovery on Wednesday.
- “Our sole responsibility at this point is to bring closure,” said Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah.
- Fifty-four people are now confirmed dead in the Champlain Towers South Condo collapse with 90 people still unaccounted for, though officials warned there is "no livable space left."
- Jadallah told the families at a private briefing Wednesday that search teams would remove rescue dogs and sound devices but continue to dig through the rubble for the bodies of victims.
Gov DeSantis won’t commit to review of aging buildings
- Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said at a news conference Wednesday that it remains unclear whether structural flaws in the condo were unique to the building, its construction, or its maintenance.
- Built in 1981, the complex was in the process of a 40-year safety recertification inspection when it collapsed.
- While experts have argued the collapse reveals inadequacies in the certification process and need for statewide condo checks, DeSantis said he wouldn't commit to actions on the state level as condominiums are “kind of a dime a dozen, particularly in southern Florida” and that the collapsed Champlain Towers South “had problems from the start."
“We obviously want to be able to identify why did this happen. Is this something that was unique to this building?... Is it something that buildings of that age, that would have implications beyond that whether southern Florida or the entire state of Florida? I think we need to get those definitive answers.”
- DeSantis added that Florida residents are grieving deeply.
"I don't think the state is ever quite going to be the same."

What else could they do? The only chance for a survivor at this point would be if they had a food/water source and protection during the initial collapse. And the only way that would be likely is if they had one of those expensive earthquake beds that no one would get unless rich - that puts you in to a coffin by having your bed collapse and holds inside food, water and oxygen containers. One would have to use empty containers for your human waste, but there are no examples of survivors this far in to such a disaster.
This is normal procedure after a event when the possibility of rescue appears to be negative, then recovery is the primary goal.
Sad for the victim's families. This needs to be done! I hope the area becomes a memorial park and not another high-rise!
I believe that if a family member suffered these kind of injuries, because you love them so much you wouldn’t want them to be alive with the agony of crunch injuries plus no water no food the suffering under the concrete and torture of knowing you’re going to die, it’s very unfortunate for this to happen to anyone but it would be better for them not to even know what happened to them while they slept, therefore, recovering could have started sooner, my sympathy and condolences to all families that lost loved one in this horrible tragedy.
Fist, let’s face facts much of the South a poor building codes! The fact that the inspection two years ago, that nothing happened is a real testament to the laws in Florida! Florida is in an extremely hard environment for buildings with the constant salt spray/ mist, to high winds from Hurricanes! Republicans continue to block real building codes that effect the health and safety of people that use those buildings!
It's very sad! The people and their pets now without hope of being rescued.
I have seen dying patients live for a week at maximum without water. The kidneys shut down and electrolyte imbalances develop. The body becomes somnolent as death approaches. There’s worse ways to die. We are basically “bags of mostly water” (Star Trek).
Another case in point of how America is becoming a third world country. This is the sort of thing that used to happen in the slums of India, not Florida beach front property.
Sad but it is time.
Sad but necessary. At this late date all those who are still missing are almost certainly among the dead.
This is exactly what you can expect from a party that doesn’t believe in regulations or spending an extra penny! Short cuts and denial!
This shouldn't have happened but it did due to negligence because of greed. Inspections should be done yearly, especially after tropical storms because of the location and flooding that seems to occur a lot. Poor management of these buildings will give you this tragic result. It's extremely sad that lives were lost. The weight of the pancaked rubble doesn't give any hope after all this time for anyone to still be alive. The dedication and tireless efforts of rescue workers, search and rescue K-9, digging and digging, using equipment for detection of life is amazing. In short...all those highrise buildings are at risk because they endure a lot. They did all they could to find victims. It's time.
I think it is time. There has been no life sounds heard from embedded microphones or vibration sensors, no response from search dogs and no indication that anyone is left alive. The gruesome work ahead is to gather remains that can still be DNA tested and give families at least some closure. The news crews and observers will have to be moved back because I expect this will be rather unsettling and gruesome to witness by families or anyone else.
This shouldn't have happened in the first place! The owners, managers, everyone who new the building was unsafe should be jailed for manslaughter! And be forced to pay reparations to the families!
An AP article providing a reasonable explanation for ending the Rescue Operations after only 13 days: "Crews give up hope of finding survivors at collapse site." "SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — Emergency workers gave up Wednesday on any hope of finding survivors in the collapsed Florida condo ..." https://apnews.com/article/da3696a7a3ca55c50374bc9b7afb123a Highlights: * "Unlike some collapses that create W-shaped spaces where people can survive, a “pancake collapse” like the one in Surfside tends not to leave livable spaces, (Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raise) Jadallah said." * Hope of finding survivors was briefly rekindled after workers demolished the remainder of the building on Sunday, allowing rescuers access to new areas of debris they hoped would contain “voids,” or open pockets with enough room for a person. "Some of those voids did exist, mostly in the basement and the parking garage, but no survivors emerged... "
It’s a sad and devastating situation but at this point, I don’t think there will be any survivors. The families do need closure by knowing what happened to their loved ones and finding them.
Sadly, Unfortunately, at some point it has to change. They did the best they could with all they had. I didn’t have any family members involved or live in that state, but I want to thank all for helping in this effort, it take a toll on people involved. Thank you! Sadly, there should be an investigation in to the Quality of cement used, short cuts, regulation, laws, the basic design and construction of the building. This was a condominium own by the residence. The structure was their responsibility for all repairs, just like a home owner, the question is how many got any reports on the building or knew?
NOTICE! OUR SENATORS WERE SILENT!!!!
Sad for the family’s and people who lost their lives.
It is a very sad thing. But, reality is that there is no chance that there are people still alive in that rubble. Loved ones don't ever want to "Give Up" and that is very understandable, even Honorable. Deep down I am sure that even Loved Ones already knew there was no chance of finding anyone alive at this Point, if at all.
