California Sets Date for Gov. Newsom Recall Election
Do you think that California Gov. Gavin Newsom should be recalled?
What’s the story?
- California’s secretary of state announced last week that the election to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) will occur on Tuesday, September 14th.
- The secretary of state announced in April that recall organizers gathered 1,616,042 valid signatures which met the threshold of 1,495,709 required to force the recall election.
Why is there a recall election?
- Newsom has faced criticism over his handling of California’s pandemic response. The lockdowns he ordered have caused the state to have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, and California’s K-12 public schools have one of the lowest percentages of students who have returned to in-person learning among any of the 50 states.
- Newsom also sparked accusations of hypocrisy in the fall of 2020 after participating in a birthday dinner for a lobbyist at an exclusive restaurant that charges a minimum of $350 per person less than two hours after he urged Californians to cancel their Thanksgiving gatherings. He apologized the next day, but in the weeks following the incident the state imposed more restrictions on in-person dining amid a rise in coronavirus cases. Those restrictions largely remained in effect until they ended on June 15, 2021.
What role do voters play in a recall election?
- When voters cast their ballot in a California recall election they’re asked to weigh in on two questions: whether the politician should be recalled from office, and who should succeed them if they’re recalled.
- A majority vote is required for the recall question to succeed.
- If the politician is recalled, the candidate with the most votes is elected to replace them, regardless of whether they received a majority of the vote.
How common are gubernatorial recall elections?
- Newsom's recall election will be only the fifth gubernatorial recall election to occur in the last 100 years throughout the country.
- The other four gubernatorial recalls occurred in North Dakota (1921), Arizona (1988), California (2003), and Wisconsin (2012). Only two resulted in the governor’s removal, as Lynn Frazier of North Dakota and Gray Davis of California were recalled, while the Arizona recall election was canceled due to the governor’s impeachment.
- Despite the rarity of successful recalls and the challenges in forcing a recall election, every California governor since 1960 has faced a recall effort.
- In the successful 2003 recall of California Gov. Gray Davis (D), more than 100 candidates ran to replace him, which led to him being replaced by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), who won 48.58% of the vote.

This is just another attempt by Republicans to destroy our electoral process and democracy. Unfortunately, if the election doesn’t go their way, there will be endless challenges to its validity. Sad.
This is the most ridiculous thing, such a waste of time, $ and energy. So tired of gop/GOP astro turfing. When ya got nothing else this is what they do. Same people who sponsor this crap sponsored the inserection and all the phoney vote recalls. Just answer the first question that you do not want a recall and leave the other blank or empty. Perhaps they'll pull more paid phoney candidates again also, the only way they can win anymore is by cheating.
California’s economy is greater than that of many countries. Gavin Newsom would have been able to do more about the problems facing it, if there had been support of State and local governments at the federal level. The abandonment of CA in terms of federal support to solve the many-faceted problems in the State is a travesty. Newsom, at least, has leveraged his political support to maintain this large state that runs the disparate gamut of every social, environmental, economic, political interests. A humongous job like that requires the skill, knowledge, finesse, and understanding only someone like Newsom brings to the job.
People need to look at this persons record through California. He wasn’t good for San Francisco, wasn’t any good as a LT. governor and did worse as a governor. He is a hypocrite and didn’t care when the entire state was locked down. He had a surplus due to bills which taxed the state before the pandemic and when the pandemic hit, the budget when into the red. He only was able to give out money in lotteries for vaccination due to the federal government giving him money, not of any of his doing. Typical politician waste and lack of representation will continue if he is not recalled as a consequence of his mistakes and lack of actual concern for this state. Remember to use your power to vote to regain control of this state. Look at your cost of living(rent) and consistent gas prices which are way higher than most of the country.
But if you want to examine yourselves as a State electorate please feel free to do so. Sometimes it’s best to consider whether the problem isn’t Governing but the people that require so much governing. We’ve had to reevaluate how burying our heads in the sand of our history has held us back in Virginia. It is worthwhile re-evaluating whether California shouldn’t do the same, I might add every other state to that list given the trajectory of our National politics.
No
It’s a layer!
The Governor was trying to protect the people of his state. If more states would have been more protective of the people instead of letting businesses stay open and to HELL with how many people died we might have been able to lead normal lives by now. Thanks to the unvaccinated we will have to be careful for a long time.
This is more of the GOP / Trump BS sham show that our TAXES are paying for to dig into the Dems yet again.. Gavin is a great governor and I’ll be voting fr him again.
I honestly have no hard information on the good things and bad things that Newsome may have done. But, from what I can see, this looks a lot like the Republican stunts of magnifying the bad things to make them seem horrendous while ignoring the good - and the Democrats oblivious to it all because they see their jobs to be governing for the people instead of doing whatever they can think of to gain unearned political power. The only good things that most Republicans claim are things that they opposed but still want to take credit for. The only politicians who were truly bad by every measure was the trump messiah and his acolytes - he did start some ‘good’ things but totally f’d them up with his greed, impulsiveness and ineptness. Oh, there may have been a few other good things that kind of came up by accident.
As a California resident I look forward to voting him out of office
Just more dirty dealing from the side that lost. Elections happen at the ballot box, not in recalls or court cases.
Yes
He is drunk with power and continuing to ruin California. Why do you think so many people are leaving it?
The Governor has done a good job with the pandemic, despite the shut down harming the economy. The economy can now rebound; lives lost to COVID will never be back and those with long term symptoms may suffer for a lifetime. I vote no recall.
I’m a Californian and I’m ticked about having to pay for this. Do I “like” him? No. Didn’t like him as a mayor either. He’s got that whole politician vibe. Do I think he’s done anything worthy of recall? Not at all. Did he have to make unpopular decisions during a crisis? Yes. Did he make the hard choices anyway? Yes. He rubs me the wrong way, personality wise, but he’s doing a decent job. As for comparing California to some gop lead state, or any other state, it’s apples to oranges. We are the largest economy in the USA, we rank fifth as an economy in the world. Other states are like a small city. We supply not only a large part of your food, but we also subsidize many smaller states with poor economies. I’m ticked off I have to pay for this boondoggle. We need that money for water and to fight off “the space lasers” setting everything on FIRE.
This is how we control idiot’s… you do work for us and don’t forget it like most of you have and to stop your way of thinking you should get paid half what you get not and only get a raise when people on Social Security gets one and the same amount. Plus your medical should be Medicare only. You get way to many PERKS.. it’s got to stop your killing us with TAX. MRGO
All democRATic politicians should be recalled, removed from office, arrested for what they have done to this country, especially encouraging the commie, domestic terrorists BLM/ANTIFA to commit violence and destruction.
Republicans , again, trying to takeover & causing insane trouble bc they hate democrats! The recall should be stopped immediately. What a disgrace republicans r.
Hey Republicans, stop wasting our tax dollars on recalls. Newsom won the election. We don’t need snowflakes who sign petitions at the farmers market wasting our money for no good reason.
