Should the Senate Take Up Democrats' Election Reform Package?
Do you support or oppose the Senate taking up Democrats’ election reform package?
What’s the story?
- The Senate is expected to take a procedural vote on Tuesday that will determine whether the chamber will start a debate on Democrats’ election reform legislation. Although the vote is expected to fail, it’s likely to fuel further calls by Democratic lawmakers to abolish the Senate’s 60 vote threshold for most legislation (aka the legislative filibuster).
- Tuesday’s vote is on a cloture motion on the motion to proceed to the legislative vehicle for Democrats’ For the People Act, a summary of which you can find here. The motion requires 60 votes to succeed, meaning that if all Democrats vote in favor they would need to be joined by 10 Republicans.
- The vote is not a vote on final passage of the package. Instead, the vote is on bringing the bill to the floor so that debate can continue and amendments can potentially be considered before another cloture vote requiring 60 votes is held prior to a potential vote on final passage.
- Tuesday’s vote is expected to fail, as no Republicans have expressed support for Democrats’ election reform, and at least 10 GOP senators would be needed. It’s also unclear whether all Democrats will vote in favor, as some have expressed opposition to provisions of the For the People Act.
- Most prominently, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has expressed his opposition to the For the People Act as drafted and on Monday declined to reveal whether he will vote in favor of Democrats’ motion to open debate on Tuesday.
- Manchin and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) have both repeatedly said that they oppose using the “nuclear option” to eliminate the legislative filibuster, but will likely face renewed questions on that front once after Tuesday’s vote. Democrats would need unified support from all 50 senators in their caucus and Vice President Kamala Harris to eliminate the filibuster.

As I stated in a similar question this proposes taking away the state's control guaranteed in the Constitution regardless of how much sense it may make. Further the argument to get rid of the filibuster - this has been argued for many years and would in effect make the Senate a smaller version of the House - pure majority rule which in turn changes the nation from a Democratic Republic to a pure Democracy. On the flip side, this would mean if in a future election party control flips then the current party in charge would be helpless to stop anything the new controlling party does. Which perhaps doesn't matter if the ultimate plan would be to find a way to make the current controlling party keep power, such as by proposing creation of more states to gain more senators, etc. The problem has become that neither party trusts the other to do the right thing and to only do whatever helps get more power for whichever party.
Expanding access to the vote is the foundational work of a democracy.
In Missouri, Voter suppression bills, that shorten times to vote, stop mail in ballots, stop automatic voter registration, clear off voter rolls if the person has not voted regularly, require a photo ID without providing one for free (instead of taking a utility bill for ID), are all against the right to vote. Stop the ALEC boiler plate and Heritage Foundation voter suppression bills in Missouri. Get a Republican platform that is popular and helps healthcare, childcare, infrastructure, elder support, $15 minimum wage, right to build a union, pro-women’s reproductive rights, pro- LGBTQ, and anti-Qanon, anti-autocrats, anti-conspiracy theories, anti-fascism, anti-white supremacy. Vote for National federal voting rights for the People Act and The John Lewis Civil Rights Bill. Republican non platforms are not popular for Missourians.
“Have a glass of milk, eat a sandwich, just do some fucking thing!” There’s no work or effort whatsoever being a contrarian! If the RUBES don’t like the bill, offer changes. Just do some fucking thing, cause doing nothing works for no one. That’s your job! Sit down, discuss with your fellow Congresspersons, compromise and pass helpful problem-solving legislation. Otherwise anyone can say no to the other guy who says yes, and vice versa. So what do we need you for?
Please advise if we can do anything to help for
Hell no
PLEASE vote 'NO' on S 2093! Oppose!
Breaking the filibuster is not ideal. But given the GOP will not support ANY Democratic proposal, breaking the filibuster is the ONLY way any progress will be made. Break the filibuster and PASS the Voting Rights, Infrastructure, Climate change, etc bills and let the people, over time, see if it works. It’s NOW OR NEVER TO MAKE A POSITIVE CHANGE!!!
Leslie G: Sorry you had the same problems with ID cards. Youi know, just requiring voter ID can really keep people from voting because of some of the asinine state policies that make it so difficult, particularly for young, senior, disabled, poor and naturalized citizens. Sort of makes me yearn for Jimmy Carters' plan for a national registry for registered voters - because it puts all national election voters on a level playing field that cannot be tampered with by local politician's for their own political benefit. Although, I suppose a politicized Congress could find ways to underfund it, like the Republicans have underfunded the forensic accounting functions of the IRS, making it harder to catch the wealthiest tax cheaters. Don't worry, the IRS can still catch up with people who make math errors or fill out the wrong forms.
The For the People Act is critical for the United States to remain a democracy and needs to be supported by every American. I urge you in the most strong way possible to support the For the People Act.
Please support open Senate debate about this critical topic. Our democracy is suffering, citizens are being prevented from voting. We must continue to make voting easer, more representative, accessible, and yes, more and more secure.
This has already been determined by the 14th and 15th amendments. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or BY ANY STATE. Some of you MAGAs need a thesaurus more than a constitution. And if you don't know what a thesaurus is, get a dictionary and work your way forward.
Continue to oppose federal election reform bills unless they solely improve election integrity.
I’m one of the people. We all want this. Stop ignoring us and start representing us. We are not as dumb as you think we are. We see that it’s not us that you represent. Didn’t you take an oath? Who raised you? You have no honor. No decency. Your word means nothing.
Of course the fascist GOP blocked the debate—that’s what fascists do. When will we stop allowing destructionists to participate in a democracy until they follow the constitutional playground rules.
The filibuster should remain in place. It supports debate and protection.
Start working for the American people.
States rights TRUMP federal involvement in election laws.
A no brain!
This is a no brainer, when a political party can stop even the discussion of a topic, especially something as basic as voting rights, were in real trouble!
