McConnell Announces Opposition to Jan. 6 Commission - Do You Share His Opposition?
Do you support McConnell's opposition to the Jan. 6 Commission?
What's the story?
- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has announced his opposition to the House-passed bipartisan plan to create a 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
- The vote was 252-175, with 35 Republicans joining all Democrats.
- McConnell criticized the bill - co-sponsored by Mississippi Democrat Bennie Thompson and New York Republican John Katko - as "slanted and unbalanced."
- "After careful consideration, I've made a decision to oppose the House Democrats' slanted and unbalanced proposal for another commission to study the events of Jan. 6," he said Wednesday on the Senate floor.
- McConnell pointed to ongoing law enforcement investigations and arrests and claimed a commission would result in duplicative efforts.
"So there is, has been and there will continue to be no shortage, no shortage of robust investigations by two separate branches of the federal government. So ... it's not at all clear what new facts or additional investigation yet another commission could actually lay on top of existing efforts by law enforcement and Congress. The facts have come out, and they'll continue to come out."
- Former President Trump blasted the proposed commission Tuesday, labeling it a "Democrat trap" and urging the GOP to "get much tougher and much smarter."
