McConnell Announces Opposition to Jan. 6 Commission - Do You Share His Opposition?
Do you support McConnell's opposition to the Jan. 6 Commission?
What's the story?
- Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has announced his opposition to the House-passed bipartisan plan to create a 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
- The vote was 252-175, with 35 Republicans joining all Democrats.
- McConnell criticized the bill - co-sponsored by Mississippi Democrat Bennie Thompson and New York Republican John Katko - as "slanted and unbalanced."
- "After careful consideration, I've made a decision to oppose the House Democrats' slanted and unbalanced proposal for another commission to study the events of Jan. 6," he said Wednesday on the Senate floor.
- McConnell pointed to ongoing law enforcement investigations and arrests and claimed a commission would result in duplicative efforts.
"So there is, has been and there will continue to be no shortage, no shortage of robust investigations by two separate branches of the federal government. So ... it's not at all clear what new facts or additional investigation yet another commission could actually lay on top of existing efforts by law enforcement and Congress. The facts have come out, and they'll continue to come out."
- Former President Trump blasted the proposed commission Tuesday, labeling it a "Democrat trap" and urging the GOP to "get much tougher and much smarter."

That man has done as much to kill democracy as anyone. He needs to be held accountable.
Not just no but HELL NO! He’s afraid of what will be found.
America will never be a good country as long as McConnell is involved.
Oh, Mitch. So unpredictable. Not.
Silence created Hitler History repeats now in America No more a democracy Gop is now the nazi party Just listen to their words and watch their actions
We must not let the GOP stop an investigation into an assault on our democracy! Force them to debate why they support the overthrow of democracy with a real talking filibuster or just abolish the filibuster. This is too important to let them stall!
This is a disgrace. Bengauzie had an investigation, 9-11 had one. What is wrong with these senators. It’s just plain wrong not to have an investigation. I thought police officers were important. What are these Republicans trying to hide. This is simply appalling to vote no on so many levels. The GOP is shameless. I just don’t understand why they don’t want the truth!!!!
I want Congress to investigate the Jan 6 insurrection to the fullest extent possible.
This is the final legacy of the Trump Republican Party and the McConnell Do Nothing Senate. This isn’t a partisan fight over funding, and it’s not a vote-threatening fight over who wins an election. It is an investigation into events that caused the deaths of both cops and protesters; an event that both disrupted momentous constitutional business, and defaced the US Capitol building and its artifacts. MY GOD the mob wanted to murder Mike Pence; does that even matter? I urge Sen Pat Toomey to NOT ONLY VOTE FOR A 1/6 COMMISSION, BUT ALSO CONVINCE AT LEAST ONE OTHER REPUBLICAN SENATOR TO DO SO AS WELL.
Hell no! Why? Remember the Keener Commission which have never been put into practice. There have to be a commission to right this wrong.
This needs to be done. Vote for this.
Mitch McConnell defends insurrectionists instead of fulfilling his oath of office.
It's simple: The American people fired Trump and replaced him with Joe Biden. Trump did not like it so he told his "friends" to violently attack our government so that Congress could not make Joe Biden the official president. Anyway, if someone from another country did what Trump did, they would be convicted of treason. And Trump should be convicted of sedition. Presidents are not above the law in this country.
McConnell is siding with his party -- not with the truth nor our country.
Shameful! All opposing the safety of colleagues! The rule of law must supersede the failures of lawmakers personal to act.
He’s afraid any investigation will expose how much his fellow comrades were involved in this whole despicable Insurrection.
#MoscowMitch continues his support of Russia and China (his wife has family and businesses in China) making himself, the unAmerican GOP and by extension the USA look inept in the eyes of the world. The Texas Three Stooges, Louie, Johnny, and Eduardo our Hispanic immigrant from over the border support the downfall of the USA if it means bringing back Trump, Fascism, and control of the masses.
Sounds to me like Mitch should be put on the stand and questioned as to what he knew about it. Forget it, he would just lie.
How bout we for a committee to investigate the terrorist organization BLM and antifa?
BENGHAZI!!! Mitch and company couldn’t get enough of that but attempting to nullify an election and steal the presidency merits nothing? Members opposed to this are complicit and likely trying to cover up their own involvement.
