The IT: ❤️ Reforming the organ transplant system, and... What's the best way to fight discrimination against Asian-Americans?
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
Welcome to Wednesday, May 5th, Mickeys and Minnies...
The House Oversight Committee’s Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy held a hearing Tuesday on reforming America’s "grossly inefficient" organ transplant system.
The hearing ― “The Urgent Need to Reform the Organ Transplantation System to Secure More Organs for Waiting, Ailing, and Dying Patients” ― featured testimony from stakeholders including patients on a waitlist for a transplant, a doctor who is a living donor, and experts on the transplant system.
There are 107,000 Americans on an organ transplant waitlist, 33 of whom pass away each day before a transplant becomes available. Additionally, there are hundreds of thousands of Americans who are undergoing dialysis and would benefit from a transplant but aren’t on a waitlist.
Much of the hearing focused on the role played by the nation’s 57 non-profit Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs), which are certified and regulated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
OPOs are granted a monopoly over their designated region and focus on obtaining organs from deceased donors, which account for over 80% of transplants.
Should there be reforms to the U.S. organ transplant system?
Combatting Racism Against Asian-Americans
Asian-American business leaders have launched a foundation to challenge anti-Asian discrimination amidst an increasing number of racial attacks against the community.
The Asian American Foundation raised $125 million from its board members to support Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) organizations. It also raised another $125 million from organizations like Walmart, Coca-Cola, Amazon.com, the Ford Foundation, Bank of America, and the NBA.
The foundation plans to focus on three areas:
- Supporting organizations and leaders who are measuring and challenging violence against Asian American and Pacific Islanders
- Developing a data standard that tracks violence and hate incidents
- Helping to create K-12 and college curriculums that “reflect the history of Asian American and Pacific Islanders as part of the American story.”
How do you feel about the initiative?

And, in the End…
It's Cinco De Mayo—which is not Mexican Independence Day (that's September 16).
In the 1960s, Chicano activists introduced the once-regional holiday to the U.S. Now, Americans from L.A. to N.Y. commemorate the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.
Feliz Cinco de Mayo,

It doesn’t exist as it is portrayed in the Media. Sure bigotry exists, it always will but the Media overly hypes.
I like Leslie’s approach. It is well laid out with specific goals. NOW Please develop and issue rapid testing kits to all summer camps free of charge, and have the CDC revise their guidelines. The current ones will discourage the majority of campers from getting the social and emotional skills they have missed out on... And it is another round of ammunition for Republicans. Summer camp is the media’s playground for finding the discourse still pulling families apart. And the testing grounds for safer school openings next fall. Please don't screw this one up! Come on people, think the guidelines through for feasibility and impact! Look at ways to give children authentic social opportunities this summer. Our kids have now missed out on recreational activities for over a year. Some outdoor park features like spray parks still have yet to be reopened! Why are the kids paying the highest price for the adults screw-ups? Vaccines or no, I do not see adult recreation subject to the same level of closure as children's recreation is still facing.

As for correcting the inefficiency of the organ transplant system, defining the problem(s) is the place to start. A good way to do that is to write down every step taken in the process, examine those steps to see what can be eliminated or combined with other steps, and then put the process in motion. After review to make sure everything is handled properly and the most efficiently, detail the steps and requirements in a written document and enforced those steps.
Racism gains attention because politicians use it as a basis to get votes. That personally needs to stop! However, if Asians feel discriminated against, they need to be able to communicate with their Congressional representatives by filing civil rights complaints. Most importantly, the complaints need to be followed up on to see what action was taken to correct the situation. Then an evaluation should be made to see if that determination was fair and proper.
Racism Against Asian Americans: Hopefully, this initiative doesn't turn out to be another divisive platform. While the initial intent always appears to be good, it usually ends up placing the blame on another resulting in more discrimination, eg: BLM - Target: Police, Me Too - Target: Men. Efforts such as these have done more damage than good.
Anne, Really misinformation?? BLM chapters made a joint statement that they separated from the global foundation due to lack of financial transparency and accountability. You can also google this and you’ll learn the million dollar homes one BLM founder has purchased also. Looks like you need to dig a little deeper.
@Freethinker @Anne “Anne, Really misinformation?? BLM chapters made a joint statement that they separated from the global foundation due to lack of financial transparency and accountability. You can also google this and you’ll learn the million dollar homes one BLM founder has purchased also. Looks like you need to dig a little deeper.” If Anne were paying attention to what’s going on around her, she’d also know full well that Google (and generally social media) and their highly advanced AIs / tracking systems only show you what they want you to see, which perhaps depends on which politician or special interest gives them the most $$$$$. Perhaps BLM started as a genuine movement, but at this point, it is a corrupt group of extremist / Marxist / terroristic individuals preying on the pain and suffering of the dead / grieving. Breona Taylor’s mom had even come out and said they were “used” by BLM and never received help. In addition, if you did your research on that story as well, you’d know that everything you were told about how it unfolded was a well-designed inflammatory narrative aimed at inciting racial tension and mistrust in police. Meanwhile, the head of BLM is hiding “business trips” to Maui and million dollar home(s!) for herself on the social justice dime. Anyone who says “do your research” or “Google it” literally just has no information to back their point of views which are obviously based in opinion and emotion, and are projecting something onto you that they themselves should consider. Not a single productive conversation can be had from that place. So much information suppression happening, and those who seek more information and express themselves, are attacked by the social justice woke mob for not blindly following a bunch of ignorant people who are literally walking into a burning volcano while rolling their eyes at their communities who are trying to say “hey, it’s probably going be really hot in there, maybe don’t”.. sad. 🙄🙄
To do nothing. Stop creating divisions between us.
If you are interested in knowing about BLM, what they stand for, their finances, and what they do to help specific people in the community, all you have to do is google it. Please don’t give credence to any so called “free thinker’s” and “Caren’s” opinions! They are known for sharing a whole shitload of misinformation!
Wonder if the Asian American Foundation will make their funding contributions transparent like the BLM organization (or lack there of)? The victim’s families that BLM exploited have yet to see any assistance. Violence has definitely gone up in correlation with BLM protests, which may be why we see violence towards Asians on the rise. So far I don’t see any benefit with BLM or Stop Asian Hate movements other than more division in this country and focusing more on our differences rather than what unites us.
Tell me, have you ever seen a person discriminate against an Asian? I haven’t. 99.99% of interactions are not racist. Hardly anyone in this country is racist except the extreme of both sides. Heck, going through college I remember all the minority kids getting access to special rooms and all of the scholarships in my college being for minorities/women. Imagine being a while male and seeing 2 dozen scholarships and you’re not eligible for any of them due to the color of your skin.
