Here are some helpful clues to keep in mind's eye:
Signs that you're seeing a deepfake
- Poorly synced audio and video
- Lower-quality spots in the video
- Irregular blinking
- Blurriness where the face meets the neck and hair
- Inconsistent skin tone
- Blurriness in the face but not elsewhere in the video
Some questions to ask yourself
- Is the person saying something you wouldn’t expect them to say?
- Who benefits if this video is true?
Good luck!

Glad to see most people getting 5’s and 6’s! I got 5/6 due to pressing the wrong button on the Obama one. Now I know Jordan Peele put together a PSA. Of course, these deep fakes weren’t the hardest to see through, yet their realism will improve over time. The tips are on-point and it’s fair to say anything you see digitally should be scrutinized.
I hate being misinformed. I hate fake news. I sapport the truth. Even if it hurts
6/6 and only one was a guess (actors). Mouths not syncing with audio were the main clues other than the Elvis picture, which was simple because of the impossible timeline.
Frank-001......since the Britannica describes a Renaissance man thusly: the notion that humans embrace all knowledge and develop themselves as fully as possible.....I concur with Dorothy.........antonym: trumplican
I got 4 out of 6 correct....that worries me.....will have to be more vigilent (sp?)......that's a third of the time! Yikes!
Five out of Six....and the one I got wrong I though was a trick question. Outsmarted myself.
5 out of 6 for me
6/6...I raised 3 teenagers, now close to my grandkids; taught 6 graders and retired (at 55) as principal of PreK-8th graders!! I got a lie-detector implant in my brain!!! Just sayin’...
4 out of 6. However, I would never even think to check for a deep fake unless the subject said or did or represented something that seemed clearly wrong or out of character. Deep fakes are getting better and better and they add a lot of ‘deep fake’ credibility to intentional disinformation campaigns. This is dangerous stuff and worthy of some form of deep fake monitoring service - particularly with the mid term election rush coming. … … … Anybody else think that Tucker Carlson is a rather poor deep fake rendering of an actual weasel?
6/6 but frankly, those weren’t that hard. But really don’t trust the crap you see on the internet, especially social media. #deleteFacebook
If you don't know that this site is one big one, then you don't know. :)
5/6
5/6. Missed the Jennifer Lawrence one.
Interesting and educational. I got 5 of 6 correct. I missed the last one since I was clueless on the question and answer. Most of the dubbed videos are very obvious. The scary part if that many do not read thoroughly, know history and accept whatever they see on social media without verifying the source. That is a formula for destruction of the Republic.
6/6 for me. The most disturbing videos made though are the deepfakes of famous women's faces on porn actresses/cam girls. I can't imagine watching my face on someone else's body and other people thinking it's really me. It just seems a little out of line somehow. I'm not even sure there would be a way to control that, but it's super scary.
CAUSES ASKS: "How'd you do? [identifying deep fakes]: ME: Got 5 of 6, still some work to do.
Frank-001: How about ‘philosophical’?
I got 4/6.
I got 5/6, also missed the Reagan one; I thought the mouth on the right looked weird. However, I don't get my news from Facebook or other social media, so I'm really hoping I'm less susceptible to seeing these...at least for now.
I am very concerned about this. Every day on this site I see evidence that many people are poor consumers of information: falling for misinformation, citing biased non-news sites and articles, spouting false equivalencies, and spreading conspiracy theories. It's very troubling that so many in our country cannot use their ability to check sources, identify real facts, and verify what they hear. I hope the tech community acts to protect us from this rising form of disinformation, because it seems Congress sure won't.
