What's Next for H.R. 1 in Congress?
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) hasnât yet announced when he will bring Democratsâ sweeping overhaul of election laws, known as the For the People Act, to the floor for a vote.
Though the bill narrowly passed the House on March 3rd, it could still be considered later this springâand potentially trigger a ânuclearâ standoff over Senate rules.
The Senateâs legislative filibuster, which requires 60 votes in favor to limit debate on the bill as itâs considered, remains a substantial barrier to H.R. 1 because there arenât 10 Republican senators in the 50-50 Senate willing to vote to allow the bill proceed.
Furthermore, Democrats donât appear to have the votes to invoke the ânuclear optionâ to override Senate precedents to eliminate the legislative filibuster.

The Alabama House of Representatives has voted to overturn a ban on yoga in K-12 schools.
Saying "Namaste," chanting, and mantras are still forbidden, even if the bill passes. Moves and exercises taught to students would need to have exclusively English names.Â
In 1993, at the urging of conservative groups, the Alabama Board of Education voted to bar yoga, hypnosis, and meditation in public school classrooms.

This weekend saw about 100 people arrested and two police officers injured.
"We're seeing too much spring break activity," Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber told CNN Saturday morning.
"We've got a problem with too many people coming here to let loose."
The Florida Department of Health (FLDH) dashboard reported 1,973,109 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, an increase of 5,167 cases over the previous day.
