Bill Gates: Rich Nations Should Shift to '100% Synthetic Beef' - Do You Agree?
Should rich nations shift to synthetic beef?
What's the story?
- Microsoft founder Bill Gates recently told Technology Review that "all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef."
"You can get used to the taste difference, and the claim is they’re going to make it taste even better over time."
"How to Avoid a Climate Disaster"
- In his new book, How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, Gates suggests that countries can help reduce methane emissions during food production by moving to "100% synthetic beef."
- "Impossible and Beyond have a road map, a quality road map and a cost road map, that makes them totally competitive," Gates said, referring to two major plant-based meat companies.
"As for scale today, they don’t represent 1% of the meat in the world, but they’re on their way."
- Gates acknowledged in his interview that getting rid of cows is an unpopular proposal. “Saying to people, ‘You can’t have cows anymore’ — talk about a politically unpopular approach to things,” he told Technology Review.
- Many on Twitter confirmed that the idea was, indeed, politically unpopular:
