- A Capitol police officer is dead from injuries he suffered during Wednesday's riots.
- Brian D. Sicknick died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday evening, according to the department.
- "Officer Sicknick was responding to the riots on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol and was injured while physically engaging with protesters," USCP said in a statement.
"He returned to his division office and collapsed. He was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The death of Officer Sicknick will be investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch, the USCP, and our federal partners."
- The House Appropriations Committee, which controls the Capitol police department's budget, has launched a review into what went wrong. Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and House Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Ryan (D-OH) released a statement early Friday about Sicknick's death.
"Our hearts break over the senseless death of United States Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick, who was injured in the line of duty during yesterday’s violent assault on the Capitol. Our prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues on the force."
- Amidst ongoing criticism over a lack of preparedness, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund has said he will resign effective January 16th.
