#Texit: GOP Chair Floats Secession for 'Law-Abiding States' - Would You Support It?
Would you support #Texit?
What's the story?
- The chairman of the Texas Republican Party released a statement calling for states to secede after the Supreme Court shot down a lawsuit led by the Lone Star State seeking to overturn the results of the presidential election.
- And State Rep. Kyle Biedermann - a Republican representing the greater San Antonio area since 2017 - announced plans to propose a referendum on the state seceding from the U.S.
- "The federal government is out of control and does not represent the values of Texans," Biedermann wrote in a Facebook post.
"That is why I am committing to file legislation this session that will allow a referendum to give Texans a vote for the State of Texas to reassert its status as an independent nation. #Texit"
- The remark drew swift condemnation, including from Republicans:
- “I believe @TexasGOP should immediately retract this, apologize, and fire Allen West and anyone else associated with this. My guy Abraham Lincoln and the Union soldiers already told you no,” tweeted Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a frequent Trump critic.
“The Texas Republican Party is officially in favor of leaving the Union. They have lost their minds. Biden will be President, but these people are deadly serious about secession and sedition. And this is the only question that media should ask any elected Republican tomorrow,” added Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI).
