U.S. Issues New Demands for Iran Nuclear Treaty
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
What’s the story?
- The Trump administration announced on Monday that any new deal with Iran would require that the country stop enriching all uranium and halt support for militant groups in the region.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo outlines new demands
After calling out Iran for a host of “malign activities,” Pompeo listed 12 basic requirements Tehran must meet for a new agreement, including:
- Withdrawing all of its forces from Syria.
- Ending its support for militant groups (like Hezbollah in Lebanon).
- Ceasing arm shipments to the Houthi militia in Yemen.
- Stopping its threats to destroy Israel.
- Releasing all American citizens.
Pompeo said Iran could either respect the new terms or face “the strongest sanctions in history.”
“Relief from sanctions will come only when we see tangible, demonstrated, and sustained shifts in Tehran’s policies,” Pompeo said in prepared remarks at the Heritage Foundation in Washington. “We acknowledge Iran’s right to defend its people. But not its actions which jeopardize the world’s citizens.”
What do you think?
