House Democrats held a press conference Tuesday announcing that they will move forward with two articles of impeachment targeting President Donald Trump ― abuse of power and obstruction of Congress ― for his alleged transgressions.
“Today, in service to our duty to the Constitution and to our country, the House Committee on the Judiciary is introducing two Articles of Impeachment charging the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, with committing high crimes and misdemeanors,” Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said.
President Trump took to Twitter to rebut Democrats’ claims that he abused his office by pressuring Ukraine’s government to investigate a political opponent:
In a statement, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said:
“The President will address these false charges in the Senate and expects to be fully exonerated, because he did nothing wrong.”
What’s next?
The Judiciary Committee is expected to hold a markup session later this week to finalize the legislative language around the impeachment articles, likely on Thursday.
Once that’s completed, it will pave the way for consideration of the articles of impeachment on the House floor as early as next week.
